7. Changuu Island

A visit to Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is one of the most popular excursions from Zanzibar. The best way to get there is a traditional dhow; The journey from Stone Town takes approximately 30 minutes. The main attraction is a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises imported from Seychelles in the 18th century.

  • Some of these reptiles are over 150 years old and weigh an average of 200 kg. A half-day excursion also gives you the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear waters, snorkel the reef with a variety of colorful fish, and relax on the beach.
