The most popular things to do in Tanzania are wildlife-related adventures and safaris.
Flying in the cold before first light, then bouncing down bumpy roads in a safari vehicle to a hot air balloon date can seem like a pretty strange activity on an African safari. But step forward a few hours and you sit around a beautifully set table, under a flattened acacia, on the legendary Serengeti plains, drinking champagne and the image becomes one of sophistication. On most flights, the pilot covers sections that have been flown at higher altitudes so that you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Serengeti. Other sections may include low-level flights with the opportunity to see wildlife. Experienced pilots can follow rivers and streams and glide a few meters over grunting hippos or wandering giraffes. If you fly low, you can get some great aerial photography of wildlife. You move across the plains where the wind takes you while the balloon crew in their vehicles chase you from the ground.
The Serengeti Balloon Safari is often referred to as the world’s most beautiful balloon ride and is without a doubt one of the most sought-after safari activities in Africa. Imagine the sun rising as you fly over the plains of the most famous wilderness area in Africa. Animals go about their activities undisturbed while you enjoy the world from your high seat.
The pilot varies the height of the balloon during flight to allow different perspectives of the airplane and the animals. After about an hour, the balloon sinks and lands for breakfast under the trees in the heart of the Serengeti. Guest toilets and toilets were installed near the landing area. All hostels in the central Serengeti region offer the balloon safari as an activity. The more distant lodges do not have enough time in the morning to take their guests to the balloon.
Balloon safaris can be added to your itinerary in any month of travel. The Central Serengeti Launch Site (available year-round) is a great option every month with lots of wildlife viewing and spectacular scenery. The South Serengeti launch site offers the opportunity to get an aerial view of the Great Migration in the open plains from mid-December to early April and similar to the Western Serengeti launch site from mid-May to early July.
Peacefully rising above the treetops as the sun rises above the horizon, you can experience the endless plains of the Serengeti from an unforgettable perspective. As we leave very early in the morning, you can even see some nocturnal predators preparing for the day.
Diving conditions in Zanzibar are excellent, whether you are a novice diver or an experienced advanced diver. We are both advanced divers who have logged over 100 dives each and we really enjoyed the diving experience we had in Zanzibar. The diving conditions were almost perfect when we went diving in late March and early April. There wasn’t much current and visibility was pretty good. We could easily see 8-12 meters and all of our dives were quite easy and relaxing.
Scuba diving in Zanzibar
Temperature: Like most tropical islands in the world, Zanzibar has relatively warm water temperatures for diving for most of the year. The water temperature between November and May is 28 to 29 degrees. And during the rainy season between June and October, it drops to 24 to 25 degrees.
Some of the places for scuba diving
It is one of the most famous marine reserves in Zanzibar. Besides the fantastic underwater world and beautiful coral reefs, it is also known as one of the most luxurious private islands in the world.
Wattabomi is one of the most popular dive sites in Zanzibar. It is located on Mnemba Atoll, so you will have to patiently endure 1-2 hours of boat time to reach this dive site from the northern tip of Zanzibar. This sensational dive site gently descends from shallow water at a depth of around 6 meters to a depth of 30 meters. It was probably one of the deepest dives we did on our trip to Zanzibar.
The next dive site is a short boat ride from Wattabomi and is called the Aquarium for nothing. There are so many fish lovers here that it feels like you are diving in an aquarium. The marine life here is very diverse. So expect to see everything from butterflyfish, scorpionfish, lionfish, zombie-looking black-spotted pufferfish, trumpet fish, crushing mantis shrimp to tiny macros like banded pipefish and nudibranchs.
Magic Reef was probably our favorite dive site in Zanzibar! It really looks like an underwater paradise with the colorful reef and all the exotic-looking residents that live there. You will also love this if you love macro hunting. Be on the lookout for stealthy ninjas like leaf fish, crocodile fish, octopus, and frogfish. Here we could see the frogfish walking on these pretty feet. And of course, you will also find the usual suspects, such as angelfish, black snapper, triggerfish, flounder, and clownfish (Nemo). Magic Reef is only 15-20 meters deep and is a fun dive for beginners and advanced divers.
If you love reef diving, you will love the dive sites around Tumbatu Island. Most of the dive sites here are between 10 and 12 meters deep. The perfect depth for hard and soft corals to grow and thrive. Fishing is the main source of income for the island, although the Watumbatu does not eat much fish.
