Description

Explore Belize in the dark caves of the Cayo District, the steamy jungles in the Orange Walk and the vibrant barrier reef

Overview

Living in the shadows of her cumbersome Mexican neighbour, what Belize lacks in size and international recognition, it makes up for in natural wonders, bio-diversity and that perfect combination of Central American heritage with unmistakable Caribbean flair.

This 13-day journey through Belize packs a punch and is guaranteed to leave you amazed by this country’s flattering resume: from the cool and dark caves of the Cayo District, to the steamy jungle that is home to the elusive jaguar in the Orange Walk, and the crystal-clear waters that shelter the Meso-American barrier reef, Belize – former British Honduras – is atop the list of all nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Not only does this itinerary feature birdlife, mammals and underwater wonders, it also covers key sites of ancient Mayan civilisation as well as a glimpse into the laid-back everyday life of the Cayes

WHAT MAKES THIS TRIP EXTRAORDINARY?

  • The diving in Belize is unparalleled! The Meso-American Barrier reef is the 2nd largest in the world, and home to some of the most impressive a diverse marine life there is. Turtles, sharks, rays, eels…these waters have it all.
  • Relax at Turtle Inn, the award-winning lodge run by Hollywood legend Francis Coppolla.
  • Roam the territory of the mighty jaguar in the Orange Walk District.
  • Learn about Mayan history at Caracol, one of Belize’s 900 estimated Mayan sites, most of which are yet to be fully excavated.
  • Ideal combination of jungle adventure and down time on picture-perfect Caribbean beaches

Itinerary

After arriving in Belize City, you have the day to spend at your leisure in the serene 365-acre private reserve along the banks of the peaceful Privassion Creek.

Overnight: Blancaneaux Lodge(B)

Today is filled with history as you spend the day visiting the impressive ruins of Caracol, as well as the caves and pools of Rio Frio. Caracol is one of the largest known sites in the Mayan world, and used to be a centre that covered over 55 square miles and held a population of around 180,000 people. Enjoy a panoramic view of the rainforest canopy from the Caana pyramid before stopping for a picnic lunch at the ruins. After lunch, head to the Rio Frio cave and dive into the natural pools formed by waterfalls.

Overnight: Blancaneaux Lodge(B)

After San Antonio you will enter Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, a 106,000 acre national park. During the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s many local people were employed in this area, to cut the timber however the area was affected by Southern Pine Beetles in 1999. As a result, some areas are quite barren, although it is still a good opportunity to learn about the reforestation project that is taking place here. The final stop will be Caracol, the largest archaeological site in Belize covering an area of 30 square miles amidst the thick sub-tropical jungle. Look out for the pyramid of Caana - almost 50 metres high! On returning to your hotel and time dependent, it may be possible to cool off from the heat at Rio-on Pools in the rainforest and visit the caves at Rio Frio, two of the Cayo area's natural highlights.

Overnight: Blancaneaux Lodge(B, L)

This morning, you will be transferred 35 miles northwest of Belize City to the Community Baboon Sanctuary where you can experience close encounters with the howler monkeys of Belize. After your private guided tour through the sanctuary, you will sit down for lunch before heading to the airstrip for your private charter flight to Orange Walk (via Belize City), an eco-friendly area within a stunning rainforest, known for being the best area in Belize to spot the elusive jaguar! Upon arrival, check in to your lodge and spend the evening at your leisure.

Overnight: Chan Chich Lodge(B, L, D)

You will have two days to explore this beautiful area that is bursting with an abundance of wildlife. There are around 9 miles of trails to be hiked with the aid of a guide and there are optional tours of walking safaris, bird watching, night walks, canoeing, fly fishing and horse riding. If you'd rather explore by vehicle, there are visits to the wetland habitat at Laguna Seca or La Milpa, a Mayan site located nearby. A vast amount of wildlife has been spotted on the estate, including deer, monkeys and jaguars, as well as white-lipped and collared peccary tapir, brocket and white-tailed deer. Smaller species spotted include tayra, fox and kinkajou.

Overnight: Chan Chich Lodge(B, L, D)

Following your adventurous few days, you will have the chance to relax in Ambergris Caye, the gateway to the vast barrier reef and atolls. Take a short 45 minute flight to the main island and ensure you have a window seat to gain a birds-eye view of the sparkling blue waters, coral reefs and clear lagoons. Spend the remainder of your day relaxing in your resort amongst the tropical gardens overlooking the azure ocean.

Overnight: Matachica Resort(B

Today you will be met at your hotel and taken on your half-day excursion to the second largest barrier reef in the world. On the way, you will stop at the dive shop for your diving equipment and a safety briefing with your dive master before heading to the dock to board the motor boat to the coral reef. You will head out on three dives; the specific dive locations will vary depending on the weather conditions and recent wildlife sightings. Due to the clarity of the water, the views whilst diving are unparalleled, so expect to see stunning healthy coral formations and an abundance of willdife including rays, turtles and different types of shark. After your marine excursion, head back to your luxury lodge to relax in the serene paradise.

Overnight: Matachica Resort(B)

Take today to explore the beautiful cayes and the island's only town, San Pedro. The sandy streets are lined with waterfront restaurants, tiki bars and dive shops for those wanting to relax. If you'd prefer to discover more of the marine life, you can visit some of the popular dive sites including Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Alternatively, Ambergris Caye offers pristine beaches to laze upon under the beautiful beaming sun.

Overnight: Matachica Resort(B)

Today, catch a short flight to Belize City and connect with your flight to Placencia, the 25-kilometer peninsula that runs parallel to the Belizean mainland and the village at its southernmost tip. To the west, the land is flanked by a lagoon and distant views of the Maya Mountains, then to the east by mangroves and the Caribbean Sea.

Overnight: Turtle Inn(B)

Placencia allows you to truly relax and experience beautiful Caribbean beaches whilst also having the chance to dive, snorkel and sail off the shores. The village offers dive shops, restaurants, bars and a lively colourful atmosphere to explore.

Overnight: Turtle Inn(B)

Check out of your hotel this morning ready to transfer back to the Placencia Airstrip for your short trip to Belize International Airport. Here you will catch your international flight home.
