Overview

Tailored to your requirements, spend time with the grizzlies of Bella Coola, take helicopter flights over glaciated valleys and enjoy gourmet cuisine at the idyllic Tweedsmuir Park Lodge. This safari provides the perfect week away for a family looking for some adventure, or a couple looking to experience the Canadian wilderness. Lodging at the wonderful Tweedsmuir Park Lodge, home to great wines and inspired cuisine, you set out each day on a variety of excursions, from drifting down the river watching grizzly bears as they fish, taking scenic helicopter flights over glaciated valleys, embarking on nature walks through the forests or just soaking in the hot tub. WHAT MAKES THIS TRIP EXTRAORDINARY: 1) Explore isolated and wildlife-rich locations via helicopter (at additional cost). 2) Drift down the Atnarko River as grizzly bears swipe salmon from the water’s edge and eagles circle ahead. 3) Venture through Bella Coola Valley, which is home to the highest concentration of grizzly bears in North America. 4) Stay at the wonderful Tweedsmuir Park Lodge and dine on locally sourced cuisine.

Itinerary

Arrive at Tweedsmuir by plane or car and take in your surroundings before receiving your lodge orientation and bear safety briefing. After that you'll be straight out for your first excursion – a drift down the Atnarko River. Grizzlies aren't the only wildlife you may encounter though, so look out for otters, bald eagles and black bears too. Overnight: Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (D)
Rise before breakfast and head down to the Wildlife Viewing Station which is ideally located for early-morning bear activity. Back to the lodge for breakfast before going out again with your naturalist guide for a nature walk around the park, learning to track the bears' movements. You can enjoy a picnic in the park's lush surroundings while discussing the morning's sightings. Continue looking for bears and perhaps opt for a hike to Stillwater Lake in the afternoon, then go back to the lodge to freshen up for dinner. Overnight: Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (B, L, D)
Similarly to yesterday, you can start the day with bear sightings from the on-site Wildlife Viewing Station and a choice of hot or continental breakfasts. Next you will head out for another drift down the meandering Atnarko River between massive, snow-capped peaks; relax and enjoy the scenery, whilst keeping your eyes firmly peeled for wildlife; especially, of course, grizzly bears. Finish the afternoon with more nature walks and hikes around the stunning Tweedsmuir Park. Overnight: Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (B, L, D)
Today is your chance to learn about the history and culture of Bella Coola Valley. Take in the pristine landscapes, discover historical totem poles and visit the culturally modified ancient cedar trees with your guide on hand to explain all about these unusual finds. Enjoy lunch at Clayton Falls Park overlooking the fjord, before heading to Bella Coola town to pick up any souvenirs you may want from this amazing destination. Overnight: Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (B, L, D)
Enjoy another day of activities, from river drifts and nature walks to fishing and bear viewing. You'll now be well-versed in what to look for when searching for bears, so your sightings should be good. Dine at the lodge for one final evening meal recounting stories of your exciting sightings with staff and guests. Overnight: Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (B, L, D)
Depending on whether you are departing by plane or car, you may have some time to relax at the lodge and take in your last few moments with the bears near the Wildlife Viewing Station. Say goodbye to Tweedsmuir Park and ensure you have all your memory cards packed with your many wildlife photos, ready to show your friends and family upon your return.
