The Shri Krishna Temple is located in Udupi and it is considered to be an important religious centre. The temple is also called Shri Krishna Matha. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna. This temple was built approximately in the 13th century. Saint Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya founded this Vaishnavite temple. The idol of Lord Krishna here is very famous and also beautiful because he is depicted as a small boy and thus the idol is also referred to as Balakrishna. One can worship the idol of Lord Krishna from a distance through a magnificently carved silver plated window which has nine holes and it is called the Navagraha Kitiki. Another famous thing here is the Kanakana Kindi. It is believed that this is where Lord Krishna appeared to his devotee Saint Kanakadasa. There is a popular tale associated with this. It states that Kanakadasa belonged to a low caste and he was not allowed to enter this temple. Thus he went behind the temple and prayed to Lord Krishna through a small crack in one of the walls. Lord Krishna was pleased with his devotion and thus he appeared to him. The Kanakadasa Mantapa is located just adjacent to the Kanakana Kindi and one finds a statue of the saint there. There is also a Golden Chariot here which is very popular. The temple also offers free meals to all the devotees. Some of the festivals that the temple celebrates are Saptotsava, Vasantotsava, Krishna Leelotsava, Udupi Paryaya Utsava, etc. This temple is also very famous for its customs and rituals and also for the teachings in the Dvaita philosophy because of which many people come here to learn more about this culture.

The Udupi Railway station is close to this temple. From the railway station, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this temple. The Mangalore Airport is located close to this temple. From the airport, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this temple. There are many buses that one can take to reach this temple. One can also take a taxi or a private cab to reach this place. The best time to visit this place is from the months of August to March.

Places to visit in Udupi

Vadabhandeshwara Temple: This temple was built by Madhvacharya. It is dedicated to Lord Balarama who is the brother of Lord Krishna. The temple is also called Anantheshwara Temple. This temple is located near the seashore and it is believed that this is where Madhvacharya saw a vision of Lord Krishna. On the occasion of Mahalaya Amavasya, many people visit this temple and have a bath in the sea.

Jomlu Theertha Waterfall: The waterfall is created by the River Sita. The height of this waterfall is approximately 20 feet. This place is also a popular picnic spot among local people. The atmosphere around this waterfall is extremely calm and peaceful. One can also hear the sound of birds chirping here. This waterfall is also surrounded by greenery on all sides. One can enjoy fishing here in the water.

Ratha Beedi Market: One can also enjoy shopping at the Ratha Beedi Market area which is close to this temple. At this market area, one can shop for many religious things like incense and also religious idols. There happens to be lots of crowd here during festivals and especially during that time many temporary shops and stalls are made there so that people can enjoy shopping.

Bekal Fort: This is another place that one can visit. It was built approximately 300 years ago. The fort is surrounded by a beautiful beach. From the top of this fort, one gets to see an amazing view of the Arabian Sea. The purpose behind building this fort was for defense requirements. In this fort, one finds an observation tower in which cannons were kept earlier. This observation tower played an important role in determining the movements of the enemy and also with regard to the safety of the fort. One also finds a Hanuman Temple and an ancient mosque here. In this fort one also gets to see the place where all the ammunition was stored. The architecture of the fort is also quite noteworthy.

Bekal Beach: This beach is popular because of its backwaters, forts and also because of its scenic beauty. The beach is also a well-known eco-friendly destination. It is also a popular picnic spot. One should definitely visit the Rock Garden here where one will find sculptures, murals, and also laterite rubbles which will be of different shapes and sizes. These are arranged in such a  way that it happens to match the theme of the garden. There is also a play area for children here where they can enjoy themselves. One can also indulge in bird watching here.

The Hosdurg Fort: Located in Kanhangad town. This fort is also called Kanhangad Fort. It is believed that this fort was constructed by Somasekhara Nayak who was a ruler of the Ikkeri dynasty. The fort is surrounded by a high brick wall with round bastions. Today however this fort is mostly in ruins. One finds the Karpooreshwara Temple and the Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple within this fort. To the southwest of this fort, one finds the Nityananda Ashram. One mainly finds public Government offices and also a school here in this fort today.
