Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, close to Karnataka border. It is conveniently located on Wayanad Coorg Route, with a little deviation. An opportunity to get closer to wildlife of Western Ghats, the Tholpetty WildLife Sanctuary is abundant with many animals like Bison, Deer, Langur, Wild Squirrel, Jungle cat, Elephant and numerous birds. The watch tower near the lake is a vantage point to watch the animals coming to the lake to drink water. A two hour safari by jeep is arranged by the forest department into the park. Safari is available in the morning and afternoon. Arrive early to ensure tickets for the jungle safari. It is a beautiful destination located 20 km east of Mananthavady on the Kodagu Road. The jeep ride here offers brilliant opportunities to view various animal and bird species in their natural habitat. One gets to see herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears and many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies and birds including vultures. Visitors are restricted to the outer tourist zone. It gives one an excellent perspective on how we must strive to conserve these natural wonders. 

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary lets you explore the unleashed wildlife culture of Wayanad. This prominent sanctuary located in Tholpetty stretches for 350 sq. kilometres and comprises the vast culture of flora and fauna which are truly rare to find in the populated areas. Enjoy a jeep ride at the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary and witness unique animals like herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears, and many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies and birds including vultures. Besides, you get to see tuskers, multicoloured birds and butterflies and many vines when you traverse through the entire spot. 

 

Karapuzha Dam

Karapuzha Dam is one of the most stunning dams in the destination. The dam is known for its picturesque setting and skilful architecture. Situated in the thriving Wayanad District of Kerala and present on both sides of the Karapuzha River, Karapuzha Dam is one of the largest earth dams in India. Here, the water is 158 feet deep and the dam can be visited during the day preferably because the visibility gets low at dawn. Karapuzha Dam is situated at a distance of 7 km from Kakavayal. One can take a bus or a taxi to reach the dam easily since it is well-connected with the major cities including Calicut, Bangalore, Mysore, and Kozhikode. Though the Karapuzha Dam can be visited throughout the year, the perfect time to visit it is during the winter season from December to February since the climate is pleasant and enjoyable during this time. Also, it is best to visit the dam during the morning or evening.

 

How to Reach Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad

By Air- Calicut International Airport is the nearest airport to Wayanad. Which is 90 km away. Visitors can reach Calicut from any part of the country. Taxis are available at the airport to Kalpetta. From Kalpetta to Tholpetty, the distance is 54.5 km.

By Train- Wayanad district is not connected by rail. Visitors can take a train till Kozhikode, the nearest railway station to Wayanad. Kozhikode is connected with major towns and cities by train. From Kozhikode station, taxis or buses can be boarded to travel to Kalpetta. From Kalpetta to Tholpetty, the distance is 54.5 km.

By Road- One can reach Kalpetta by road from all cities. Bus services from nearby cities to Kalpetta. Distance from Kalpetta to Calicut (75 KM), Mysore (150 KM), Bangalore (290 KM) , Kochi (250 KM), Gudalur (70 Km), Ooty (125 Km). From Kalpetta to Tholpetty, the distance is 54.5 km.

 

Important Information About Karapuzha Dam, Wayanad

Best Time to visit: The monsoons are the best time to visit Karapuzha Dam when the water reaches up to the brim.

Entry fee: No entry fee.

Timings: The timings are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The entry closes at 4:30 pm.

Distance from Wayanad: It takes a distance of 38 kilometres by road to reach here from the bus station.
