Silver Cascade Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls, is the first attraction that unfolds to tourists, located on the Madurai - Kodaikanal road, on the way to Kodaikanal. It is located at a distance of around 8 KM from Kodaikanal. The Silver Cascade Falls formed as a result of the overflowing of the famous man-made Kodai Lake, are the perfect way to have a break while on a long road trip. One can also take a swim in the waters of the waterfall provided the temperature is right. The perfect stop over in-between a long journey, these silver cascade falls demand your attention while you travel from Kodaikanal to Madurai. While on your journey from Kodaikanal to Madurai by road, you are confronted by the stunning sight of water thrashing down from 180 feet right into the ground below and mesmerizing one and all with its sheer strength and beauty. The fruit sellers selling exquisite, mouth watering fruits which you can buy and enjoy under the falls is an experience unmatched.

This remarkable waterfall is a famous stop for first time tourists on Kodaikanal tour. The monkeys here make the Silver Cascade Falls a pleasing place for children. There is also a smaller but more serene waterfall below the bridge which crosses the steam here. During the rainy season, the water flow increases by volume and roars down in startling Cascades and is a treasured experience. It is a wonderful roadside scenery not to be missed en route to Kodaikanal. The authorities have been allowing the tourists to take a quick bath here earlier. However, off late the Cascades area is compounded and a small park has been developed around it. Making it fine for a few minutes break of travel and photography. 

Silver Cascade Falls is heaven for those who love to view the beauty of nature at different locations. The waterfall is located at an altitude of 2318 m. The waterfall is believed to be a remnant of the Kodai Lake, where tourists can even take a dip in the water flowing down from the falls. It is believed that the water from the falls is laden with various minerals, which gives these waters their healing and refreshing properties. It is a sight to watch monkeys playing on the cliff and slippery rocks of the fall. The name ‘Silver cascade’ is given to this fall, owing to the colour of the water which appears silver when flowing down the 55 meter high cliff. On either side of the cliff, you can find rugged rocks and wild foliage springing up in all directions. There is a dedicated viewing platform in front of the waterfall, which serves as an excellent point to view the flowing water fall down in a pool. One can easily reach the silver Cascade falls via local transport such as auto or rickshaw, in Kodaikanal.


How To Reach

  • Air: The Nearest airports from Silver Cascade Falls are at Trichy (150 km), Madurai (120 km) and Coimbatore (170 km). All three are well connected by road with Kodaikanal.
  • Rail: Nearest rail head is at Dindigul which is well connected to Kodaikanal. One can take an auto, hail a taxi or take the state buses till Kodaikanal.
  • Road: Kodaikanal is well connected by state transport buses to all major cities in Tamil Nadu. Dindigul which is the district headquarters is 90 km from Kodaikanal. After reaching Kodaikanal you have to travel a further 8 km on Kodai-Madurai road to reach the Silver Cascade Falls. 

Best Time To Visit

Winters are the best time to visit the waterfall due to pleasant temperatures and low humidity level in the region. The weather is usually cooler during nights. Therefore, a layer or two of clothing shall be enough to protect you. Monsoons can also be a good time to visit the waterfalls with water levels at their highest allowing for a more beautiful experience of the fall. 

Winter season: The months from December to March are some of the best ones if you wish to visit the Silver Cascade falls. The winter season and the cool atmosphere make it a pleasant experience to visit the waterfall and revel in its natural beauty.

The levels of humidity are lowest in the region during this time and the night time is especially cooler, which gives the tourists a thrilling experience of the falls.

Summer: From the months of April to June, the weather can be somewhat hot and unbearable for the tourists. The weather can soar up during these months and make the noon time unattractive for visiting the falls. Moreover, the volume of water can also get scant during this time.

Monsoon season: The months from July to November can bring typical rains. Visitors can also pick this time to visit the Silver Cascade falls as the volume of the water rises during this time and gives a spectacular view of the fresh surroundings.
