This park is located in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, India. The name of the park was derived from the Satpura Range. Satpura National Park is rich in biodiversity as it’s the part of the rich central Indian forest ecosystem. It was the first setup in 1981 with the adjoining of Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuary of the total ecosystem of 2,200 km2. Satpura Tiger Reserve is spread over 2133.307sq.km and the core area is up to 1339.27sq.km and the rest is buffer. Sandstrokes Peak, Narrow Canyon, Ravine, Dense Forest and lots of scenic views can be spotted in this national park. Near Pachmarhi on Mahadeva hill, Dhoopgarh is the highest peak of Madhya Pradesh and Amarkanta of nearly 1350m high. The nearest town from Satpura National Park is Pachmarhi. For an animal and true nature lover, this place is no less than heaven as around 1300 spices of plants are there and 10% of the total area is classified as grassland. And around 30 species of reptiles, 50 species of mammals, 254 species of birds, and 50 different types of butterflies can be found. The fauna of Satpura National Park consists of Leopards, Sambar, Chital, Indian Muntjac, Nilgai, Four-horned Antelope, Chinkara, Wild Bear, Bear, Black Buck, Fox, Porcupine, Flying Squirrel, Mouse Deer, and Indian Giant Squirrel, etc. and following birds like Hornbills and Peacocks are also found in this park. The flora consists mainly of Sal, Teak, Tendu, Phyllanthus Emblica, Mahua, Bel, Bamboo, and grasses, and Medicinal plants.

History of Satpura National Park


The Satpura itself suggests its meaning, Satpura is a Sanskrit word that means seven mountains. In 1857 a British officer captain J Forsyth discovered this park in the search of a great Indian freedom fighter Tatya Tope. While in this search he accidentally reached the highlands of central India and found this park. At first, he was mesmerized by its beauty and later on found it suitable to set up the military base for better control.

Best time to visit Satpura National Park


This park is accessible for tourists from 1st October to 15th June. At this period, a visitor can take the benefits of exploring this place to its maximum. The beautiful tiger reserve can be visited and can also enjoy the jungle safari, elephant safari, boating, walking, etc. Satpura National Park is rightly located in the heart of India as the whole beauty lies in here only.
