Places to visit near Sakrebailu Elephant Camp, Shimoga

Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Reserve: This place is spread over an area of approximately 200 hectares of land. The purpose of this place is to accommodate lions and tigers who have been rescued from circuses that are all over India. The Forest Department conducts safaris for tourists here. The Safaris were started in 1998. During the jeep safari one gets to see many animals here like lions, tigers, leopards,etc and also many varieties of birds. There is also a children's park here where the children can enjoy themselves.

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary: This place is located on the Mandagadde Island which is on the River Tunga. The sanctuary is surrounded by dense forests. Migratory birds from all over the world come here during the month of May for the purpose of breeding. The Darters, Median Egrets and Cormorants are three important species of birds that one finds here. The other birds that one finds here are  Night Herons, Wooly Necked Stork, Pied Kingfisher,etc. Most of these birds prefer to rest on the branches of the trees here. One can indulge in various activities here like trekking, boating, birdwatching, etc.

Ambuthirtha: This happens to be the birthplace of the River Sharavathi. The place is surrounded by thick forests. Locals also consider this place to be sacred. It is believed that Lord Ram pierced the earth with his ambu for water. Thus this place came to be known as Ambuthirtha where ambu means arrow. One also finds a small Shiva Temple here.

Achakanya Waterfall: This waterfall is formed by the Sharavathi River when it takes a jump among the forests of the Western Ghats. The height of this waterfall is approximately 6 to 7 feet. This waterfall is surrounded by greenery on all sides which makes it all the more beautiful. One has to trek to reach this waterfall. During the trek one has to pass through the forest and the visitor gets to see amazing flora and also different varieties of birds there.

Kunchikal Falls: The height of this waterfall is approximately 455 metres. This waterfall ranks 116th with regards to its height. The waterfall is formed by the River Varahi. The water from this waterfall falls on the rocks making it a good scenic spot. There is a hydroelectric plant built under the waterfall in order to generate high power electricity. This water from waterfall then goes to the reservoir of the Mani Dam where the flow of the water gets reduced. One should visit this waterfall during the rainy season and enjoy the greenery all around it.

Kavaledurga Fort: This fort is an ancient hill fort which is situated at a height of approximately 1541 metres. This fort is surrounded by greenery and also the beautiful Western Ghats. One has to trek to reach this fort. There were 15 temples in this fort earlier but today one finds only three temples here which are the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, the Shikareshwara Temple and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. One also finds here beautiful carvings of ancient temples. However, today this fort is mostly in ruins.

Anekere Lake: Is another beautiful scenic spot that can be visited. This lake is a huge water body. It is also historically important. It was built as a tank by King Pandyadeva in approximately 1262 and the purpose behind building it was to supply drinking water to the city. The tank did so for almost eight centuries. Today, one finds clear water in this lake and also beautiful lilies here. The lake is also a good picnic spot.
