Pajaka is a well-known village which is located in Udupi. It is believed that this village was built by Lord Parashurama who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This village is also famous because it is the birthplace of Sri Madhvacharya who is the founder of Dvaita philosophy. One also believes that Madhvacharya is the incarnation of Lord Hanuman. The house of Sri Madhvacharya is found here in this village. It gives the visitor an insight into the life of Madhvacharya. One gets to learn a lot about his childhood through stories that are narrated here. Another attraction that one gets to see in Pajaka is The Peepal tree which is believed to have been planted by Madhvacharya. This tree has actually bloomed from the roots. A lot of serpent stones have been installed here and people carry out many rituals here. Thus this is an important religious place and one should go here in order to have a peaceful experience. 


Transportation and best time to visit Pajaka Kshetra, Udupi

The Mangalore Airport is located close to this place. From the airport, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach the village. There are many buses that one can take to reach this village. If not by bus one can also travel by taxi to reach here. One can also drive down to this village. The Udupi Railway station is located close to this village. From the railway station, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this place. The best time to visit this place is from the months of October to January.

Places to visit near Pajaka Kshetra, Udupi

Anantheshwara Temple: This temple was built approximately in the 8th century and it is believed to be the oldest temple in that particular region. It is believed that the parents of Sri Madhvacharya prayed continuously for 12 years in this temple for the gift of a child and later in approximately 1238 AD they were blessed with a baby boy. In this temple complex one also finds the Chandramouleshwara Temple and also the Krishna Temple. The main shrine at this temple is made of stone and recently a silver door frame has been installed here. One also believes that Sri Madhvacharya who was the founder of Dvaita philosophy taught and trained his disciples here in this temple complex.

Vasudeva Theertha: This is a pond that is actually a combination of all the four main holy ponds that are in and around Pajaka like Bana, Gadha, Dhanush, and Parashu Theertha. It is believed that when Madhvacharya was small he created this pond so that it could help in relieving the anxiety of his Mother.

Shree Durga Devi Temple: This temple is situated on a hillock which is called the Durga Hill. It is believed that Lord Parashurama installed the idol of Adi Shakti himself. After Lord Parashurama made Kerala it is believed that he found a pearl in the deep sea which he then transformed into a nose ring and then put it on the idol of Goddess Durga here. Lord Parashurama also created four theerthas which are basically holy ponds around this hill. It is also believed that Sri Madhvacharya who was the founder of the Dvaita philosophy visited this temple every day during his childhood. The view from this temple is amazing as it is surrounded by a lot of greenery.

The Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple: This temple is an ancient one and it was constructed approximately in the 12th century AD. It is dedicated to Lord Mahalingeshwara who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. On the west side of this temple, one finds a pond. It is believed that pearls were found in this pond earlier. Muttu in the Kannada language means pearl. This is why the place was called Muttur earlier and later it changed to Puttur. The Chariot Festival is celebrated on a grand scale here. This place is lit up with lights and fireworks. The temple is protected by an act that was passed in 1961 to safeguard historical sites in the state. Today this temple is maintained by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums and this comes under the Mysore division of the Government of Karnataka.

The Mai De Deus Church: is also a famous church in Puttur. Mai De Deus in the Portuguese language actually means Mary Mother of God. This Church is believed to have been established in 1830. It is considered to be the oldest church in the locality. In the 18th century, Christian families came and settled in Puttur and the cemetery to the east of the KSRTC Bus stand is proof of that. The place where the cemetery was actually happened to be a small portion of Government land which was actually reserved for burials but the burials were discontinued in 1914. Slowly after some time more and more Christians came and settled here. It was Fr. Piad D'souza who felt the need of constructing a new spacious Church. He then acquired paddy fields where the structure was almost being built but it was later demolished. Later Fr. Stany B.Lobo constructed the new church.

Neminatha Basadi: This Basadi is also called Kere Basadi which actually means a big Basadi.  The place is actually a holy Jain temple. The temple is believed to be almost 1200 years old. It was built during the reign of Varanga Raya who was the ruler of Varanga. The main deity in this temple is Mulnayak Bhagwan Neminatha. In this temple, one finds bronze idols of 24 Tirthankaras in the kayotsarga posture. The statue of Lord Neminatha sitting on the Kamala Peeta in the padmasana position is black in color and its height is approximately 5 feet.  One also finds a Manasthamba here which is approximately 45 feet tall and this Manasthamba is a symbol of a Jain temple.
