The Onake Abbi Waterfall is another famous waterfall which is located in Shimoga. Onake in Kannada actually  means a pounding stick which is normally used in order to powder grains and sambar masalas. There is also only one branch in the waterfall and that is why it is called Onake Abbi Waterfall. The height of this waterfall happens to be approximately 500 feet. This waterfall also happens to be one of the tallest waterfalls that is seen on the Western Ghats. One has to trek in order to reach this waterfall. During the trek one has to pass through evergreen forests where it is possible to spot animals like Sambhar, Civet Cat, etc. From the waterfall one gets to see an amazing view of the greenery all around and it is a refreshing sight.For trekking to the waterfall one needs to take permission from the Forest Department.

The Udupi Railway station is located close to this place. From the railway station one can take either a bus or a taxi to reach the waterfall. There are many buses that one can take to reach this place. If not by bus one can also travel by a taxi to reach the waterfall. There are also auto rickshaws available that one can take to go to the waterfall. The Mangalore Airport is close to this place. From the airport one can take either a bus or a taxi to reach the waterfall. The monsoon season is considered to be the best time to visit this waterfall.

Places to visit near Onake Abbi Falls, Shimoga

Someshwara Beach: This is a rocky beach which is located in coastal Karnataka. The beach gets its name from the Someshwara Temple nearby. Those who come to this beach make a visit to the Someshwara Temple to seek blessings. An interesting thing to look out for here is the Ullal Delta which happens to be a scenic spot where one can see the River Netravati entering the Arabian Sea. The beach is also a good place to watch an amazing sunset.

Sringeri: This town is situated on the banks of the River Tunga. The town gets its name from the Rishyashringagiri Hill. It is an important place because the first matha was established here by Adi Shankaracharya. This town is also known as Sringeri Sharada Peetham.There is a temple located here which is believed to be almost 1200 years old. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya was so impressed with this place that he stayed here for twelve years and taught his philosophy to his disciples.One also finds other historically important temples here like Sri VidyaShankara Temple, Parshwanath Jain Temple, etc. This town is also a well known learning centre because of the many temples that one finds here. Many students come here to mostly learn Vedic philosophy.

The Milagres Church: This is a Roman Catholic Church which was established in 1680 by Bishop Thomas De Castro. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles. The Church is almost 339 years old. This Church was actually built on a piece of  land which was gifted by the Queen of Keladi Rani Chennamma to the Goan Catholics who wanted to relocate themselves back to Mangalore. During the reign of Tipu Sultan he felt that the Catholics in Mangalore were joining hands with the British so that he could be defeated. As a result many Christians were captured and many churches including this church were partially destroyed. After Tipu Sultan was defeated the captured Christians returned to Mangalore and this Milagres Church was rebuilt making it look like a splendid piece of art.

The Sultan Bateri: It is known because of its watchtower which happens to be located amidst nature. This watchtower is believed to have been constructed by Tipu Sultan. The tower was built approximately 15 years before his death in 1784 AD. Earlier this place was called Sultan's Battery and Battery actually meant firing of cannons. The watchtower is made of black stones. The purpose behind building it was to stop English warships from entering the river. One finds an underground storage area under this tower which was used to store gunpowder. This watchtower also acted as a naval station. One also gets to see an amazing view of the Arabian Sea from this watchtower.

Corporation Bank Heritage Museum: This museum has a vast collection of coins  that belong to various dynasties and they date back to almost 400 BC. At this museum one gets a lot of knowledge regarding the history of banking in India since 1906. This museum has almost 1400 coins and these coins have a market value of over 4 million rupees.

The Kudroli Temple: This temple is dedicated to Gokarnanatheswara who is another form of Lord Shiva. It is also the only temple in Karnataka which was started by Narayana Guru who is a famous social reformer. H.Koragappa built this temple in 1912 and he was guided by Narayana Guru. The Gopuram of this temple was renovated in 1991 to the Chola Gopuram style. Inside this temple one finds a Shiva Linga which is carved out of marble that Narayana Guru brought from Gokarna where he found it under water. The other deities worshipped here are Lord Ganesha, Lord Bhairava and Goddess Annapoorneshwari. Navratri is the famous annual festival celebrated here. On the ninth day of the festival there is a grand procession of Goddess Durga here.
