The Nisargadhama is a beautiful island that couples as a famous tourist attraction in the Coorg region of Karnataka. The island has been formed by the extensive Kaveri River, the main water source of the region. This green town is located at a close proximity to the busy town of Kushalanagar, in the Kodagu district of the state. It is a holiday destination in Karnataka.


Distance from Coorg

Nisargadhama is a breathtakingingly beautiful island off the state highway, two km from Kushalanagar town and 28 km from Madikeri. Tourists can directly  reach Nisargadhama by hiring a taxi. Almost all the buses that go to Madikeri from Kushalanagar, stop at the highway near the forest. From the bus stand, it takes around 15 minutes for tourists to reach the forest park. It is a good place to visit in Coorg and provides one an experience of being in a forest and the water body adds it up.


Sights to visit

Nisargadhama Exotic Bird Park displays a variety of birds free flight aviary with amazing opportunity to see birds from close range and one can even interact with interactive birds. Wide range of fish Aquarium to see colourful glimpse of aquatic creatures. It also has some fun rides and eateries.

A forest resort on an island, maintained by the forest department of Karnataka, Kaveri Nisargadhama Forest Park is undeniably one of the most beautiful and enjoyable part of any Coorg tour packages. When at Nisargadhama Forest, you will find a wide variety of things to do and see. Elephant ride is something that adults and kids both will enjoy. There is also a deer park and rabbit park that one can visit. With a nominal fee of INR 500-800, one can enjoy boat rides and elephant rides. Coming in large groups, the pocket pinch will be less.  Tourists often get confused between the Old Bridge and The Hanging Bridge, two separate entities altogether. The Old Bridge is yet another bridge inside the Nisargadhama, while the Hanging Bridge acts as the connecting point between the Coorg region and the tourist destination. Although the old hanging bridge has been replaced by the new hanging bridge and is not functional now, it is still a popular tourist attraction. If interested tourists can also hire guides who are readily available at the Kaveri Nisargadhama Forest Park. Apart from that one can also seek help from forest department officials who will also offer guidance about the surrounding areas and directions to various places.

The walk across the Hanging Rope Bridge to reach Nisargadhama is an absolute delight. The bridge connects the mainland to Nisargadhama.

There is a shopping complex near the parking spot outside the Nisargadhama Ecological Park.

The view of River Kaveri is also something that tourist must stop by and notice, capture in their cameras, and cherish forever. The view, especially from the hanging bridge is breath taking.


Description of Nisargadhama Forest

The 64-acre island, surrounded by the Cauvery river, can be accessed by walking across a hanging bridge. Established in 1989, the picturesque picnic spot with lush foliage of thick bamboo groves, sandalwood and teak trees has lovely river-side cottages. A deluxe cottage on stilts with the Cauvery flowing around it, can accommodate five persons. Elephant rides and boating are some of the other attractions. There is a deer park, children’s park and orchidarium in the resort. Medicinal plants are also grown which are exported to neighbouring countries. Tourists are allowed to get into water at a few shallow and safe points along the river. The tariff for the cottages ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000. The boat rides are however free for children up to 5 years of age. It is opened throughout the day.


Best time to visit Nisargadhama

The winter months, November to February in the dense forest gets chilly. The temperature falls sharply but if you have a penchant for the cold weather and a bonfire experience, this is the perfect time to visit the Nisargadhama. During the months of March to May, the temperature is a little hot and humid but the abundance of trees make up for it. The Monsoon sees moderate to heavy rainfall and hence witnesses a dip in the number of tourists visiting the area. The ambience is however wonderful with fresh air and greenery all around.


Why should people visit Nisargadhama?

Tourists pour in from all across the country to venture the pollution-free area. One would definitely not want to miss out on the island’s several attractions. Imagine waking up to the sound of myriad birds and animals, with a shimmering ray of the sun shining upon your happy face as you sip your favourite cuppa sitting in the forest cottage.

The 64 – acre island garners a large number of tourists, flocking here for family picnics and for a weekend gateway. Upon reaching here, one would be treated to a luscious view of dense bamboo groves, fragrant sandalwood trees and elaborate teak trees. Apart from the moderately comfortable weather, Nisargadhama is known for its pristine environment.
