The Mullayanagiri Peak is highest peak of Karnataka and it is at an altitude of 1950 metres. The peak is approximately 20kms away from Chikmagalur and 23kms away from Baba Budangiri. Based on regional mythology, it is believed that Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy meditated for years in the cave at the top of this peak and this is how this peak got its current identity. However, when it comes to the old Kannada literature the term Mullai is associated with forests. This peak is located amidst the Nilgiri Mountains and the Himalyan Mountains which is why the beautiful view here is a magnificent sight to behold.
TRANSPORTATION AND BEST TIME TO VISIT THE PLACE
In terms of transportation there are a number of ways as to how one can reach here. If one wishes to travel by flight they will have to get down at Mangalore Airport or Bangalore Airport and then accordingly hire a taxi that will take them to Mullayanagiri. One can also travel by train and will have to get down at Birur Junction or Tarikere from where they will have to take a taxi to reach Mullayanagiri. With regards to travelling by bus one will have to get down at Shimoga and take a taxi that will drop them to Mullayanagiri.One can also opt for a self driven car to reach Mullayanagiri.Trekking is also another way to reach the top of Mullayanagiri. The best time to visit this peak is from the months of September to April. However it is best to avoid visiting this place during the rainy season because it receives heavy rainfall and one may not be able to see things clearly.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

When it comes to accommodation near Mullayanagiri there are a number of places where one can stay and they are affordable as well. The Scenic Acres Homestay which is one of the oldest homestays near Mullayanagiri that also has a garden with fruit plantations and also beautiful flowers. This place is affordable and is run by a family who are engaged in the field of coffee cultivation. Some of the other places where one can stay at are the Hallenahali house,the Bedroom Family house, the SilverShine Homestay, the TT Nature View Cottage,etc When it comes to food at Mullayanagiri there is no food available if one undertakes the trekking route because of which it is better to carry food for the trek. However on reaching the end of the trek, at the top there are few small shops where one can get good local food to eat. The Malnad cuisine here is quite famous. The authentic Kannada cuisine and also North Indian cuisine are found here. Banana chips and also coffee are popular food items that one must definitely try. There are a number of restaurants where one can eat food at Mullayanagiri. Some of them are World of Coffee, Sri Sai Veg Corner, Mayura Deluxe, Town tables restaurant, Khansama Restaurant, etc
ACTIVITIES AND PLACES TO VISIT

This place offers a lot of activities for adventure lovers like mountain biking, road biking and also trekking. In the earlier days there were no steps at all for trekking. So the people used to climb the summit by a trail which was called the Sarpanadi or the Sarpadhari trail. The trek to Mullayanagiri starts from the Sarpadhari trail and this trek is a relatively steep one. It is best to start the trek early in the morning.At the end of the trek on top of the peak there is a small temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many devotees take up this trek to the temple and offer their prayers there. On this trek one also gets to see a lot of greenery and also points that offer a splendid view. The best season for trekking is from the months of September to February because the weather remains pleasant and also there could be a possibility of getting to see rare flora and fauna here.
There is also a temple here at the topmost summit of this peak within which there is a small statue of Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy because of whom this place is believed to have got its current identity. Near Mullayanagiri there are other places to visit as well such as the Rock Garden which is an undertaking of the Karnataka Horticulture Department. This garden has pathways that are carved out of rock. This garden is a good place for viewing beautiful sunsets,lush green pastures and plains. This place is similar to that of an orchid house and displayed here are exotic plants and also beautiful gardens. For all the nature lovers this place is definitely a must visit.
Another interesting place to visit near Mullayanagiri is the Jayanthi Coffee. This place was started by two artisans from Chikmagalur who were Late Sri. M.K.Srinivasa Setty and Sri. M. Shankara Murthy. Both of them shared a common passion for filter coffee. They have owned plantations in Chikmagalur for over fifty years and are the premium coffee growers in the region. They also have been in this coffee business for almost three generations. There is a Coffee tour there that shows the entire process of how coffee is made right from the procurement of coffee beans to the roasting, grinding and packing of them. This is the best place to shop for real flavours of the best South Indian filter coffee. One can also buy pure Coffee,spices, honey,coffee makers and other things here as well.
The Hoysaleshwara Temple is another renowned Mullayanagiri tourist place. It is surrounded by coconut trees and colourful flowers. This temple was constructed approximately in the year 1121 and it is built to honor Lord Shiva. It is famous for being adorned with the most stunning pillars and sculptures. The most prominent one among them is the Garuda Pillar that has sculptures which show the Garudas cutting their own heads when their King or Queen committed suicide.
