Meenmutty Waterfalls, Wayanad

Imagine water crashing onto the ground from over a 1000 ft. in three separate levels while an entire rainforest plays its role as the patient, supporting audience. This and much more await you at Meenmutty Waterfalls, one among Wayanad’s delightful treasures. It can be only accessed after an arduous 2 km jungle trek, the visuals on display at the summit are worth the effort. One has separate viewing points for each of the three decks of the waterfalls and due to its location this is one of the few natural wonders in the world that can be experienced in near seclusion. You feel at ease, while the lush greenery gently washes away all that ails your soul, as the roaring water gently soothes your senses. A masterpiece that lies on the Ooty route in Wayanad.

Falling from a height of 984 feet, Meenmutty Waterfalls is the second highest waterfall in Kerala. The fall is nestled amidst the lush green area of Meppadi forest range, under the South Wayanad forest division, at Chitragiri on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The waterfall is divided into three tires, each measuring a length of 300 feet. Streams of the water gain its fierce strength during the months of monsoon. Like other waterfalls of the region, Meenmutty waterfalls offer a perfect backdrop for the trekkers to indulge in hiking activity.

Cascading down through multiple tiers from a height of over 800 feet, it is a spectacular fall situated inside thick forest flowing through a rocky platform. The falls has major tiers with varying height. The first tier can be reached by walking for about half km from the parking area / main entrance of the falls. The lower tier is a smaller one with water collecting into a pool. The pool is safe for swimming with low depth. The second tier can be reached by trekking up through steps built over boulders. The half km path runs downstream of the river and offers wonderful views of the stream and thick vegetation. The third tier is the toughest and needs some walking through the stream on slippery rocks with the help of ropes. The ascend is steep at few places and this half km stretch takes about 10-15 minutes. The peak on top of the third tier offers breathtaking views of Banasura Sagar Dam and surrounding valleys. Meenmutty Falls situated amidst a serene location offers a wonderful experience to the visitors. This is a must visit place for everyone visiting Banasura Sagar Dam.

Road access is available up to the main entrance of the falls. There are several parking areas on the way to the falls. Most of the time the waterfall remains closed, it's better to coordinate with the authority for the timing before seeing this prime location.

Soochipara Falls, Wayanad

Soochipara Falls (Sentinel Rock Waterfalls) is perhaps the most picturesque spot located in the periphery of Wayanad. It is a treat for eyes to see the milky white stream of water making its way to the rivers by passing through the rocky cliffs and clinging trees. The waterfall at the end joins Chaliyar River. Tourists will have to trek for around 30 minutes in downward inclination to reach the main pool, where exciting activities like swimming, bathing and other recreational activities take place now and then.

While walking towards the main pool of the waterfall, visitors can see tea plantations, rocky edges and dense forest where the chances of spotting a tiger are quite bright. Many guesthouses and homestays are available on the waterfall stretch that offers the striking view of the mountains. Soochipara Falls is the latest fad for the adventures because it serves as an ideal base for trekking and rock climbing. Although flow is greatest during the summer season, the best time for sunset photography is arguably winter as the water flow is not that heavy. Don't forget to see the panoramic view of the mountains from the tree-top hut. Deriving its name from the needle-shaped rock that is placed here, Soochipara Waterfalls is one of the most photogenic spots for tourists in Wayanad.
