1. MASAI MARA RESERVE

Masai Mara is one of the most famous reserves throughout Africa. Known worldwide for its extraordinary wildlife. Although it occupies only 0.01% of Africa's total land area, it is home to more than 40% of Africa's large mammals. In the vast plains of Mara, visitors can see lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and countless other species in their natural habitat.

2. Landscape of Masai Mara

The Masai Mara ecosystem contains about 25% of Kenyan wildlife debris. The estimate says that around 70% of Kenya`s wildlife lives outside national parks and reserves. Thus; the need for new role models preserving the Mara wildlife, on private land is paramount. Naboisho plays that role today! Africa has lost some 9598% of its most iconic mammals over the last hundred years or so, elephants, rhinos, lions, and cheetah. WWF estimate that the world will lose 2/3 of its vertebras in the incredibly short period 19702020, ie 50 years. Some 70% of the world`s ecosystem is under stress. Habitat loss is the main reason for this decimation.

3. Location of Masai Mara

Masai Mara is located in the Great Rift Valley, a fault line about 5,600 km long that extends from the Red Sea of Ethiopia via Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. Here you can see the wide valleys and the cliffs that rise at a vague distance. Animals roam freely outside the park and move to vast areas called "ranges". Outside the park, as much wildlife can roam as inside. Many Maasai villages are located in the `dispersal areas` and they have, over centuries, developed a synergetic relationship with the wildlife.

There are four main types of terrain in the Mara – the Ngama Hills to the east with sandy soil and leafy bushes favoured by black rhinos; Oloololo Escarpment forming the western boundary and rising to a magnificent plateau; Mara Triangle bordering the Mara River with lush grassland and acacia woodlands supporting masses of game, especially migrating wildebeest; and the Central Plains, forming the largest part of the reserve with scattered bushes and boulders on rolling grasslands favoured by the plains game

4. Wilflife and Migration of Masai Mara

The Mara is perhaps best known for the Great Migration, which takes place every year from July to September. During these months the yellow savannah is dotted black by more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and antelopes that migrate from the Serengeti to the Mara in search of food and water.

Mara and Serengeti parks are interdependent wildlife havens. This is where the world`s largest multispecies migration takes place. This movie revolves around the wildebeest, which travels from Serengeti to Masai Mara during the dry season of Tanzania, and crosses the mighty Mara River in the process. The wildebeest movement deserves a reputation as one of the most spectacular sights in nature. The large migration that endangered more than 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras and antelopes are the last surviving species on Earth.

5. Big move season

From late July, millions of newly arrived brown and black dots are scattered across the vast plains of the Masai Mara National Reserve, and until December, the natural wonders of the world are even more mysterious. The wildebeest life cycle is a snapshot of the life cycle of all living things. The wildebeest spend their lives wandering, unwearyingly trekking between the Serengeti in the South to the Masai Mara in the North. Every sequence in a wildebeest`s life happens by Mother Earth. Their migratory routes are determined by the rain patterns; they wander in constant pursuit of water and fresh grass. Similarly, their calving instincts are timed to the movements of the moon, resulting in a three-week-long birth fest on the Serengeti plains in February.

The comings and goings of the wildebeest also shape the lives of many other species. For Masai Mara predators, the arrival of wildebeest marks the beginning of a period of feast and prosperity. Big cats in the particular breed during the mobile season. The abundance of prey available means that lions, cheetahs and leopards can grow strong and produce healthy offspring. The dramatic contrast between life and death seen during the big move makes the trip season a particularly great time to visit Base Camp Explorer Kenya.

6. Make the transition even bigger

No one knows a savanna-like the Masai-they are real experts. Like migratory birds, the Masai are a nomadic culture that traditionally roamed the plains with livestock. Today, the Masai are forced to find another way of life, and for over 16 years, the Masai journey has been intertwined with the Basecamp journey. We are proud to have been your partner in this battle to protect your area. Experiencing the Great Movement at the Basecamp adds another layer to experiencing the natural wonders of this world. A Safari with our Maasai Guides is a life-changing experience that will provide you with a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the intricate details of the Masai Mara Ecosystem. Because of our longstanding commitment to the Maasai community, we can provide authentic safari experiences that leave our guests filled with lifelong memories, a sense of purpose and a longing to participate.

Travelling through the Basecamp Circuit allows our guests to experience a variety of different safari dimensions. Our three camps have been purposefully designed to offer unique, yet complementary experiences. Our `mother camp`, Basecamp Masai Mara is situated bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, making this the ultimate place for welcoming the Great Migration as they arrive from the Serengeti. For another, but equally wonderful experience, our Navoisho Camps-Eagle View and Wilderness Bush Camp provide exclusive insights into the Northern Cousin, a not-so-distant cousin of the great move. Wherever you are on our circuit, the Basecamp signature of exclusivity, credibility and sustainability remains.
