Places to visit near Maravanthe Beach, Udupi

Gangolli: This is a small village in Udupi. On the west of this village, one finds the Arabian Sea and on the east of the village, there is a river. There are five rivers that meet here and hence this place is called Gangolli. The place where these rivers meet the Arabian Sea is extremely beautiful and also picturesque. There are also many beaches and backwaters here which attract many tourists from all over. This place was famous right from the 16th century. During the reign of Tipu Sultan, the Portuguese, and the British this was a major trading port. Till today it is one of the most famous fishing centres in Karnataka. The Gangolli estuary is also an important one. The backwaters at Gangolli are home to mangroves which have become quite scarce. In these mangroves, one finds various different types of birds.

Kudumari Falls: This waterfall is located right inside the forests that border the Western Ghats. Thus one has to trek to reach this waterfall. During the trek, one has to pass through the forests. This route also covers all sorts of rocky terrain. The height of the waterfall is approximately 300 metres. From this waterfall, one gets to see the beautiful coastline of the Arabian Sea.

Ottinene Beach: This beach also has backwaters because of which it becomes all the more scenic. It is here at this beach that the Byndoor River meets the Arabian Sea. One can watch a good sunrise and sunset here. This beach is surrounded by beautiful hills as well. The Kshitija Nesara Dhama is a small park that overlooks this beach. There is a hiking trail here down the woods that takes one towards this beach. The Someshwara Temple is located right next to this beach and one can visit this temple too.

Baindur: This place is popular for its beaches as well as temples. There are many tales associated with this place. One of them is that this place got its name from Saint Bindu who was fulfilling his penance at Ottinene. The Sri Someshwara Temple is located at this place. This temple is located right next to the seashore and this adds more beauty to it. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are stunning sculptures and also a Lingam at this temple that one gets to see there. The Kollur Sri Mookambika Temple can also be visited. Murudeshwar is also located close by and this place has a Shiva Temple that is surrounded by the sea on all three sides which one can visit.

Murudeshwar: The statue of Lord Shiva at Murudeshwar is another famous thing to see. This statue is the second biggest statue of Lord Shiva in the world the first one being in Nepal. The statue is approximately 130 feet high. It is located at the ancient Murudeshwara Temple. This statue and temple are surrounded by Murudeshwara Beach. This statue of Lord Shiva has been constructed recently. It was commissioned by a businessman and philanthropist Mr. R.N. Shetty. The statue was sculpted by a team of sculptors and it was led by the famous sculptor Kashinath K. who was from Shivamogga. This statue has been placed in such a way that it gets direct sunlight.

Murudeshwar Fort: The Murudeshwar Fort can also be visited. This fort dates back to the Vijayanagara period. It was built approximately in the 15th century. The then Vijayanagara Kings built this fort. This fort was later renovated by Tipu Sultan. In this fort, one gets to see beautiful paintings, amazing artworks, and also detailed carvings on the walls of the fort.
