PLACES TO VISIT

One of the famous things to see is the Darpan Sundari. It is located in the Belur Temple. This sculpture is also known as the lady with the mirror and is engraved on the walls of the temple. There are also many other singing and dancing figures (Madanikas) in the temple.Shantala Devi who was the Queen of King Vishnuvardhana was very beautiful and it is believed that she was the inspiration behind the sculptures.

The Kappe Chennigaraya Temple is a small temple and it is situated towards the south of Chennakesava Temple. This temple was commissioned by Shantala Devi who was the Queen of King Vishnuvardhana. The construction of this temple began around the same time when the construction of the Chennakesava Temple began. The Queen herself  took great interest in this temple and even oversaw its  construction. There is an interesting tale about how Kappe became a part of the name of the temple. The term Kappe means frog. It is associated with Jakanachari  who was an architect and sculptor of the Hoysala era. The architecture of this temple is similar to that of the Chennakesava Temple. However the Kappe temple is smaller in size and also less ornate. This temple also has two garbagrihas whereas the Chennakesava Temple has only one garbagriha. The Navaranga which is an important part of Hoysala temple architecture is also found in this temple.

The Veera Narayana Temple is also another interesting place to visit. This temple was approximately built in the 13th century and King Veera Ballala II built it. This temple is built in the Trikuta style with three vimanas because of which this temple is huge and spacious. The older shrine of the temple is in the centre whereas the other two shrines face each other across a long Mandapa. In the northern shrine one finds a seven foot tall idol of Yoganarasimha who holds the Shanka and the Chakra and on his either sides are Sridevi and Bhoodevi. The Prabhavati here is carved with ten avatars of Vishnu. On the other hand in the southern shrine one finds an eight foot image of Venugopala Krishna.

Sakleshpur is known for its Sakhleshwara temple and inside the temple premises one finds a broken linga that has been installed there. The temple is built in Hoysala architecture. The view from the temple is beautiful as this temple is situated on the banks of the River Hemavathi. There is also a huge statue of Lord Shiva here. The city of Sakleshpur has derived its name from the temple.Another famous temple that one can visit in Sakleshpur is the Hole Malleshwara Swamy Temple.Sakleshpur  is also famous for its rich biodiversity and it offers trekkers famous trekking routes like  Bisle Reserve Forest trek and Kumara Parvatha trek.

The Lakshmi Devi Temple at Doddagaddavalli, is another popular place to visit. It was built during the rule of the Hoysala dynasty. It is believed that King Vishnuvardhana built this temple. Soapstone was used in the construction of the temple. The beauty of the surroundings in this temple is a sight to behold. There is a beautiful lake here that surrounds the temple and around the lake there are coconut trees. The four shrines in the temple are situated in cardinal directions and they have only one entry gate. What is interesting to see here is that one can find both Shaivite and Vaishnavite deities here.

Sri Kedareshwara Temple is in Halebeedu. This temple was built during the rule of the Hoysala dynasty. This temple is a Trikuta temple. The main deity here is Lord Shiva who has taken the form of Kedareshwara. Here one finds four star shaped pillars that are on either side of the entrance which again is a famous thing that the Hoysalas did in most of their temples. There are many images of Lord Shiva,Vishnu, Brahma, Lakshmi, Saraswati,Ganesha, etc found here. Each of these images are carved keeping in mind their expressions and then accordingly each image is made to hold weapons. This place is also surrounded by coconut trees and it makes it look all the more beautiful.

Thus indeed the Manikyadhara Falls is a paradise for all nature lovers.
