Malpe Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Udupi. This beach has a never-ending coastline and on its west side, this beach is surrounded by four rocky islands. Earlier Malpe was a port which was located on the coast of Karnataka. Today it still continues to remain an important port and also a fishing harbor. Since Malpe happens to be the largest port in Karnataka the people who live here are engaged in the field of fishing and also tile manufacturing. This beach has clean white sand and also beautiful palm trees which create a calm and relaxing environment there. There are a number of activities and watersports that one can indulge in such as trekking, kayaking, jet ski, banana boat rides, surfing, rappelling, etc. Parasailing here is also a fun activity that tourists can do. This beach is also the first Indian beach that has Wi-Fi throughout the day. The beach is also the venue for the Spring Zouk Festival where DJs, arts, cuisines, and culture are showcased. This festival works in drawing more and more tourists to this beach.

Places to visit near Malpe Beach, Udupi

Vadabhandeshwara Temple: This temple is dedicated to Balarama who is the brother of Lord Krishna. It is believed that this temple was built by Madhvacharya. There is a seashore next to this temple and it is believed that this is where Madhvacharya got a vision of Lord Krishna. The person visiting this temple can also visit the beach nearby and watch an amazing sunset there. During the festival of Mahalaya Amavasya, many people visit this temple and then take a bath in the sea.

Stella Maris Church: This Church is located in Kalmadi. The name Stella Maris actually means Star of the Sea. There was no church in Kalmady earlier and the people who lived there had to travel all the way to Udupi. Traveling to Udupi was not an easy task for all the people who lived at Kalmadi. They wanted to have a church at Kalmady itself and thus they began praying. Their prayers were answered and Fr Charles D'souza who was a resident of Kalmady decided that he would build a church here. Thus, he bought a field from someone and then donated it in the name of his Mother to build a church at Kalmadi. The church was built with his own money and also with the help of the donations that people gave. Thus the Church was made and the Chapel was then blessed by Bishop Basil D'souza on 5th February 1972.

Mattu Beach: Not many people know about this beach because of which it is secluded. One finds beautiful coconut and palm trees here. From the beach, one can watch an amazing sunset too. The backwaters of this beach are extremely calm. This beach is also a good picnic spot. An interesting thing about this beach is its bioluminescence or in simple words its sea sparkles. The bioluminescent organisms basically light up this beach because of which the sea sparkles. So if one stays here till night they will get to witness this. Other than this one can indulge in a variety of water sports here.

The Mirjan Fort: This fort belongs to the 16th century. It is built over an area of approximately 10 acres. There are many tales associated with how this fort came into existence. According to the most famous tale this fort was constructed by Chennai Bhairavi Devi who was the Queen of Geroppa. Later the fort fell into the hands of the Marathas and then it came under the control of the British. This fort has high ceilings and also bastions. In this fort, there are four main entrances along with moats. One also finds secret passageways and canals in the fort. Other than this one can also see several watchtowers from where one gets to see an amazing view of the surroundings. Currently, the Archaeological Survey of India is restoring this fort.

Vannalli Beach: This beach is located in Kumta. When one views this beach from the sky it appears to look like an arch or a bow. The sand here is soft and golden in colour and along with this one finds palm trees along the shore. One finds colorful rocks at this beach and the tourist also gets to see seagulls flying everywhere here. There is a small hill next to this beach and one has to trek in order to reach the top of this hill. From the top of this hill, one gets to see an amazing view of the beach and the Arabian Sea. One can also watch a beautiful sunset here.
