Located at a distance of 3 km from the Kodaikanal Lake, Kurinji Andavar Temple is the place worth visiting not just for religious tourists. Dedicated to Lord Muruga, the temple holds an important position amongst Hindu devotees. Lord Muruga is referred as 'God of hill'. In Tamil language, the word Kurinji means 'hill region' and Andavar means 'God'. Thus the name itself symbolises its connection with the hill and the God of the hill. The temple has also connection with the Kurinji flower which blooms on the hill once in 12 years. It is said that the flower bloomed last in the year of 2004. According to some, the honey from this place during the year when the Kurinji flower blooms has medicinal value.

The temple is dedicated to the Lord Muruga who is referred as 'God of hill'. Just 3 kms from the lake, it is very famous for its Kurinji flower which blossoms in the area only once every 12 years. Along with this, you can also have an amazing view of the Palani and Vaigai dam from this temple.

The temple also acts as an important venue for the summer festival which is organised during the month of May every year. Hordes of tourists visit the temple to seek God's blessings. Along with religious significance, the temple also presents tourists with breathtaking views of the Vaigai dam and Palani hills. Thus it is a place which presents amazing sightseeing options for nature lovers as well as offers good photographic opportunities.

The temple is just 5 km from the Kodaikanal bus station and is 3 km from Kodai Lake, so you can arrive at the lake first and then visit the temple. Also, Kodaikanal Road Railway Station is at a distance of 2 km from the temple.


Best Time To Visit

Summer is the idyllic season to visit this temple because then you can explain it both in the mornings and evenings as to avoid winter fog during the chilly evenings. If you want to go around Pongal, then winter is also quite moderate to explore Kurinji Andavar Temple.

Every year in May month the temple will celebrate a splendid function. It will not only attract the local but all devotees around TN. Most of the tourists who came to Kodai also have a lot of interest in visiting the temple at the grand festival time.

History

Located 3 kilometers away from Kodai Lake, this temple pulls large crowds. The architecture of this temple is typically Dravidian in style and looks very beautiful. Once here, you can also enjoy looking at the Vaigai Dam and Palani.

This temple is not just any other abode of worship, it has a rich historical past. The Kurinji Andavar Temple was inaugurated in 1936. A European lady Leelavathi came to Kodaikanal, India,an Australian who married the Solicitor General of Ceylon called Ponnambalam Ramanathan. Hindu scriptures inspired her so much that she converted into a Hindu, and after her husband died, she built this temple commemorating his memory. Leelavathi also married a Tamilian Ramanathan. Later on, the lady called Miss Ramanathan. Furthermore, Leelavathi’s granddaughter, Devi Prasad Baskaran and her husband Baskaran donated this temple to the Palani Andavar Temple. It was initially named as SRI KURINJI EASWARE TEMPLE in which Kurinji meant the flower and Easware means the Lord. From time to time the name is changed to the Kurinji Andavar Temple.
