The Kundadri Hills are a popular tourist attraction. These hills are located in the Thirthahalli Taluk of Shimoga. The altitude of these hills is approximately 3200 feet above sea level. At the top of this hill one finds a Jain temple which is believed to have been made in the seventeenth century. There is a far road that will lead one to this temple. These hills are named after a Jain priest Kundakunda Acharya because it is believed that he performed a serious penance here.This is why the place happens to be a holy one for the Jain people. The temple is crowded mostly during the festival of Mahavir Jayanti and Makar Sankranti.One has to trek in order to reach this hill. This place is surrounded by lush forests. During the trek to these hills one also gets to see many streams. It is also possible to camp at these hills and enjoy the beautiful view from top especially at the time of sunrise and sunset.


Transportation & Best time to visit Kundadri Hills, Shimoga

The Mangalore Airport is close to these hills. From the airport one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this place. There are many buses that one can take to reach Kundadri Hills. If not by bus, one can also travel by a taxi to reach here. One can also drive down to this place in their own private vehicles. The Barkur Railway station is close to this place. From the railway station one can take a bus or a taxi to reach these hills. One can visit this place at any time of the year.

Near these hills, one finds many places to stay. The prices too are affordable. Places to visit near Kundadri Hills, Shimoga

Barkana Falls: This waterfall is considered to be one of the ten highest waterfalls in India. The height of this waterfall is approximately 850 feet. The altitude of this place is approximately 259 metres above sea level. Barkana is derived from the word barka and this is a reference to the Mouse Deer that one finds in this region. The waterfall originates from the River Seeta. This waterfall is considered to be one of the prime sources of hydro-electricity in Karnataka because the water from this waterfall is used to power a hydro- electric system. The waterfall is located amidst beautiful forests and it offers a stunning view to the tourists. During the rainy season the flow of the water here increases and it falls down with a greater volume. One has to trek to reach this waterfall.

Kavaledurga Fort: The fort is also known as Bhuvanagiri.This fort is located on top of a hill and is surrounded by dense forests. One has to trek to reach this fort. The fort has three rounds of rock wall fortifications and it was an important part of the Empire of the Keladi Nayakas during the 16th century. In this fort,one finds several shrines dedicated to  Virupaksha, Vijay Vittala, Veerabhadra, Mallara and Bhuvaneshwari. There is also a mosque here which was built by Venkatappa Nayaka. On top of the fort there is a freshwater pond. Other than this the other things in the fort are mostly in ruins. This fort is also a scenic spot as from here one can view the sun setting in the Arabian Sea.

Onake Abbi Falls: Onake actually refers to a long pole that is used to grind spices in Kannada language. The waterfall has got this name because there is only one branch in this waterfall. The height of this waterfall is approximately 500 feet. One has to trek to reach this waterfall. Once the trek is completed one gets to see an amazing view of the entire waterfall and also the jungle that surrounds it. In the jungle one finds animals like Sambhar,Mouse deer,etc. Thus this waterfall is actually a natural beauty.

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary: For all the wildlife lovers the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is a must visit. This sanctuary has been named after Lord Someshwara who is the deity of the Someshwara Temple that happens to be located within the sanctuary. The area of this sanctuary is approximately 314.25 sq km. The Kudremukh National Park is located to the southeast of this sanctuary. In this sanctuary one finds evergreen and semi evergreen forests. One gets to see many animals here like Jackal, Gaur, Wild Boar,Langurs, etc. One also gets to see birds here like Macaque, Hornbill,etc. The visitor can indulge in activities like trekking, bird watching,etc here.

Koodlu waterfall: This waterfall is also called Sita Falls because this waterfall is the first fall of the River Sita. The waterfall is located amidst the dense forests of the  Western Ghats and the Agumbe range is also located close to this place. The height of this waterfall is approximately 300 feet. The water from this waterfall falls straight into a pond. It is believed that sages used to meditate near the place where the pond is today. This is the reason as to why the local people consider the water of this pond to be holy. Since the water in the pond is not very deep, visitors can have a bath here but with necessary precautions.

Agumbe Sunset Viewpoint: Is a famous scenic spot. This viewpoint is at a height of approximately 825 metres above sea level. The viewpoint is also considered to be one of the highest peaks of the Western Ghats. From this viewpoint one gets to see a breathtaking view of the sun setting on the horizon of the Arabian Sea. The color of the setting sun into the sea is a sight to behold from this viewpoint which is why many people come here.
