Kodachadri is a beautiful looking mountain peak and also a popular tourist place in Karnataka. This peak has been declared as a natural heritage site by the Government of Karnataka. It is also considered to be the 10th highest peak in the state of Karnataka. The view from this peak is extremely beautiful as it is surrounded by lush forests. These forests are a home to many flora and fauna because of which they have become a biodiversity hotspot. One finds animals here like Indian Rock Python, Pied Hornbill, etc. Kodachadri is also considered to be a good place for trekking. This place is also historically important as one finds here several ancient structures since this place was a place of dwelling for many periods of history.


Transportation & Best time to visit Kodachadri, Shimoga

The Mangalore Airport is the closest to this place. From the airport one can take a bus or a taxi to reach Kodachadri. One can also drive down to this place in their own private vehicle. There are also many buses that one can take to reach this place. If not bus one can also take a cab to reach this place. The Mookambika Road railway station is the closest to this place. From the railway station one can take a bus or a cab to reach Kodachadri. The best time to visit this place is from the months of September to January.

Places to visit near Kodachadri, Shimoga

Mookambika Devi Temple: Is a popular pilgrimage site. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Mookambika Devi who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The Goddess is in the form of Jyotir- Linga that combines both Shakti and Lord Shiva. There are many tales associated with the origin of this shrine. One of them is that this shrine of Mookambika Devi is believed to have been installed by Adi Shankara. It is also believed that ancient Hindu Kings were patrons of this temple and that this temple also had some valuable items. The temple was also considered to be the state temple for the Nagara or Bednore Rajas making this place also historically important.

Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary: It is believed that this sanctuary was named after Goddess Mookambika who happens to be the presiding deity of the Mookambika Temple. This sanctuary spans over an area of approximately  370.37 sq km. In this sanctuary one finds evergreen, semi evergreen and deciduous trees and also few teak plantations. One also finds here animals and birds like tigers, jackals, deer, myna, drongo,etc.

Chitramoola: This place is religiously important as it is believed that Sri Adi Shankara meditated here for a few days. It is also believed that this is the same place where Goddess Mookambika appeared before Sri Shankaracharya and followed him till Mookambika Temple. Trekking here is quite popular as one has to indulge in this activity to reach the place.

Belkal Theertha Falls: This waterfall is also called Govind Theertha. The waterfall falls from Korshi Betta which is an extension of Kodachadri. The water from this waterfall is considered to be sacred because if one takes a dip in this water it is believed that their sins are washed away and that one can also get rid of all their diseases. One has to trek in order to reach this waterfall. The waterfall is surrounded by amazing greenery creating a pleasant atmosphere there.

Chakra Dam: It was constructed across the River Chakra and is located in a small town which is  Chakra Nagar. The construction of this dam was completed in 1985. The purpose behind building this dam was that so it could act as a balancing reservoir and also so that it could feed water into the Linganamakki Reservoir. This dam also helps in irrigation of the surrounding areas. The dam is also surrounded by scenic beauty on all sides which creates a pleasant atmosphere there giving people a break from their stress free lives.

Kodi Beach: For all those who love beaches they should definitely visit Kodi Beach. Kodi means shore in the Kannada language. This beach is surrounded by water on three sides. One can enjoy watching a beautiful sunset at this beach. The visitor can also enjoy a good swim in the water and children can also enjoy themselves by playing in the sand. One can also enjoy fishing here. There is also a lighthouse here which one can visit.

Maravanthe beach: On one side of this beach one finds the Arabian Sea and on the other side of the beach one finds the River Souparnika. One can also see the Kodachadri Hills from here as they act like a backdrop to this beach. This beach has golden sand and palm trees creating a calm atmosphere for a person to enjoy. For all those who love adventure, water sports at this beach are quite famous. There is also a Maraswamy Temple across the road which one can visit.

Ottinene Beach: One can watch beautiful sunsets from this place. The Kshitija Nesara Dhama is a place which is naturally beautiful and is located here. The Dhama is located on top of a small hill and one gets to see a breath taking view of the Arabian Sea from the hill. This Dhama is currently managed by the Department of Forests who have further developed this place by making few rooms and also an eatery here.
