Keladi is a temple town which is located in the Sagar Taluk of Karnataka state. This town was the capital of the  Keladi rulers who happened to be feudals of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Rameshwara Temple in Keladi is quite popular. This temple was built in the Hoysala and Dravidian style of architecture. The temple was built by Chowdappa Nayaka. In this temple one finds intricate carvings and also the deities who are worshipped inside the temple. On the pillars of this temple one finds beautiful carvings of Gods and Goddesses and also animals. When one looks at the ceiling of this temple, they find an image of the two headed bird called Garudabande on it. There are three deities who are worshipped in this temple. They are Lord Rameshwara, Lord Veerabhadra and Lord Ganesh. Each of these deities have their own shrine in the temple. One also finds a victory pillar here in the temple courtyard. Thus one should definitely visit this amazing temple.


Transportation & Best time to visit Keladi, Shimoga

The Mangalore Airport is close to this place. From the airport one can take a bus or a taxi to reach Keladi. There are also many buses that one can take to reach Keladi. If not by bus, one can also travel by a taxi to reach here. It is also possible to drive down to Keladi. The Sagara Jambagaru railway station is close to Keladi. From the railway station one can take either a bus or a taxi to reach this place. The months of October to December and March to June are considered to be the best time to visit this place.

Places to visit near Keladi, Shimoga

Keladi Museum: Which happens to be close to the Rameshwara Temple. Here one finds recovered idols that belong to the Hoysala and Chalukya period from the 16th century till the 18th century. There are also copper inscriptions, palm leaves and coins that are displayed in this museum. Approximately here one finds about a thousand paper and palm leaf manuscripts which are written in Kannada, Sanskrit and Telugu language. There are also approximately four hundred palm leaf manuscripts in the Tilgari script. All these manuscripts have information about literature,art, medicine, mathematics, history, etc. One also finds a library in this museum.

Gajanur Dam: This place is also called as the gateway of Malnad. The dam is built across the River Tunga.This dam was built in 1972 by Mysore Construction Company. The dam appears to be S shaped and the purpose behind building the dam was to help in irrigation and also for flood controlling purposes.A unique thing about this dam is that it can handle River Tunga's heavy  flows during the monsoon season.It is surrounded by beautiful fields, plantations and dense forests which creates a calm and pleasant atmosphere for the visitor.

Hidlumane Waterfall: This waterfall flows as a series of 6 to 7 falls and each of these waterfalls are extremely beautiful. The water from the Hidlumane Waterfall  falls into a natural pool below. The people who visit this waterfall can enjoy a good swim here. The view from the waterfall is a breathtaking sight. The waterfall is surrounded entirely by the greenery of the Western Ghats. One has to trek to reach this waterfall. During the trek one has to pass through steep hills and also a dense forest. While passing through the forest one can hear birds chirping and one also gets to see many beautiful varieties of birds here.

Aghoreshwara Temple: This place was considered to be an important location in the past as Ikkeri happened to be the capital of the Nayaks of Keladi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is made out of granite rock. This temple is built in Hoysala- Dravidian style of architecture and also in the Vijayanagara architectural style. On the walls of this temple, one finds intricate carvings.One also finds many sub- shrines of other deities in this temple.

Shivappa Nayaka Palace Museum: The Palace here was established by Shivappa Nayak of the Keladi dynasty and it was made entirely of rosewood. There is a museum inside this palace and one finds various sculptures and artefacts that belong to the Keladi period and also the Chalukyan and Hoysala period. In the palace one gets to see the Darbar Hall, four rooms and in one of these rooms weapons are found and also a Mini Balcony. There is also a garden here where one can go for a stroll.

Jogi Gundi Falls: It is located amidst Agumbe's rainforest. This waterfall got the name Jogi Gundi because it is believed that Saint Jogi used to meditate here at this place.The height of this waterfall is approximately 20 feet. The water from this waterfall falls into a huge pool below. Those who visit this place can enjoy a good swim in the pool.An interesting to note about this waterfall is its point of origin. This waterfall originates from a cave and then runs through a hill later getting merged into the River Malapahaari. One has to trek to reach the waterfall. The trekking route is made up of eroded rock and it is surrounded by dense forests. It is also possible to indulge in bird watching here.
