Keladi overview

Keladi is a quaint village 7 kilometres from Sagara.  This village was part of the historical keladi empire of the 14th century.  In fact, it was the first capital before it was shifted to Ikkeri, which is another village nearby. Keladi Empire was the most prosperous in India and the second in the world after Beijing. The empire was prosperous because tit controlled the cotton and pepper trading routes. This empire was also a trading centre. Keladi still has remains of some tourist attractions, which are from ancient times.

Tourist attractions


1.      Rameshwara temple


This is the most tourist destination that attracts the locals to this place. This is an ancient temple created during the KeladiNayaks temple. It’s claimed that the first ruler of the KeladiNayaks temple ChowdappaNayak who was a firm believer of Lord Shiva first created it. It about 400 years old. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and hosts other idols of Lord Rameshwara, Lord Virabhadra, and Devi Parvathi. In this temple, you will love the Dravian and Hoysala architecture used to build it.  The place is often quiet, and there are few tourists who go there.

2.      Keladi Museum


It’s in the same vicinity as Rameshwara temple. If you visited the temple, this s a must-see place. It contains all the artefacts from the old times such as copper, coins and palm leaves from the sixteenth century. When you go to the museum, you will be explained what each item means and the time which it was used. You will learn a lot from this museum.

3.       Ikkeri


Ikkeri is close to Keladi. They both share the same history. Both were capitals of the Nayaks empires except that Keladi was the first. In Ikkeri, there are many tourist attractions the common one is IkkeriAghoreshwara temple, which was created by the Nayaks Empire during the 16th century.  It’s a testimony of the old regimes that ruled here. You will also be awed by the beautiful architecture used to build the temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

4.      Jog falls


Probably you have heard about this fall. Its located 36 kilometres from Keladi. It has attracted a lot of tourists. It’s one of the falls with an extended height of 730 feet’s. It’s surrounded by trees making it the best place to go for a hike or a trek. You will enjoy the surrounding environment around the trees. Be sure to carry non-slippery shoes when going to this fall.

5.      Mount Mary Church


At first, you must be surprised by the presence of churches in this place that has many temples. Well, it has a history that will interest you. This is a roman catholic church situated Bandra with a statue of the Mary mother of God. This is a church that has stood there for hundreds of years. Entry to the church is free, and all are welcome. People come here with offering to the Mary mother of God. They pray for blessings from Mary Mother of God. The church is very vast, and it will take you approximately two hours to explore it.

How to reach?

You can get to Keladi by air, road, and rail; the nearest airport is at Mangalore. There are flights from different parts of the world from this airport.  When you get to Mangalore, you can connect to Keladi by road. The nearest rail is at Shimoga and Sagar. Sagar is only 8 kilometres away. From Sagar, you can use the road to keladi bus services are plying back and forth.

When is the best time to visit?

Generally, you are heavy rainfalls from June to September. At this time, the temperatures are low. It’s not the best of times to visit this place. From March to May, temperatures are very high. If you can brave the heat, you can still go at this time. The best time to visit Keladi is from October to February at this time everything is moderate. Most festivals are also held at this time.
