The Kallathigiri Falls is blessed with natural beauty and it is located approximately 50kms away from Chikmagalur. The height of this fall is approximately 400 feet and it gushes down from the Chandra Drona Mountains. These falls are also called the Kalhatti Falls. This place is popular among both locals and tourists. People can also take showers beneath the waterfall. This fall has the headwaters of the River Sharavathi and it also has religious significance. Based on local tales, this site was believed to be a pilgrim site of Saint Agastya who came across this waterfall while he was wandering about. It is also believed that he stayed here for a few months. The Veerabhadreshwara Temple is also located here. This is why the locals consider the water from this fall to be holy.
TRANSPORTATION AND BEST TIME TO VISIT THE PLACE
The closest railway station to this place is Birur. From there one takes either a bus, taxi,or even an auto rickshaw to reach the Falls. When it comes to travelling by road the Falls are well connected to all the major cities and surrounding districts.One can also drive up to the Falls. The nearest airport to the Falls is the Mangalore Airport. From the airport again one will have to take either a bus or a taxi in order to reach the Falls. In order to have the best experience at the Kallathigiri Falls one should visit this place during the summer and monsoon months.During monsoons, the water here falls faster and one can enjoy a good shower here. In the case of summer when the temperatures are mostly hot a visit to this place will be refreshing. This place should be avoided during the winter season because the water here turns too cold and it will be difficult for a person to bear the cold.

ACTIVITIES TO DO AND PLACES TO VISIT
There are a number of things that one can do at this waterfall. The first thing being trekking. The trek to the waterfall begins from Tarikere which is the base camp and it is located approximately 24kms away from the Falls. The trek is not very difficult and one can thus enjoy it. This trail is divided into two parts as to how one can reach the waterfall. The first trail begins at Tarikere and will end directly at the Falls. The second trail on the other hand goes through the coffee plantations of Blue Mountains Estate. If one goes through the second trail then a guide is appointed to accompany the trekkers. The trekking trail offers a magnificent view of the rolling green mountains which surround the Falls.At the end of the trek, the trekkers can even take a dip in the waters of the Kallathigiri Waterfall.
Kallathigiri Waterfalls has abundance of natural greenery. Many cardamom trees are also found here. Various shrubs,vines and other trees are also found along the trekking route to the waterfall. One can spot many animals here too. Some of the animals spotted here are elephants, monkeys,Panthers, spotted deer, bisons and even tigers have been spotted here by travellers who come here to drink water from the Falls.
The Veerabhadreshwara Temple found here was built during the Vijayanagara era. The entrance of this temple has a structure of three elephants which is a proof that this temple was built during the Vijayanagara era because elephants were a characteristic of the traditional Vijayanagara architecture. This temple was built by Krishna Deva Raha who was the sixth ruler of the Sangama Dynasty. There is a three day annual fair held here every year as a tribute to Lord Veerabhadra who is an avatar of Lord Shiva. The best time to visit this place is during the months of March and April when the Temple festival is on. Inside the cave, there are metallic idols of Lord Veerabhadreshwara and Goddess Bhadrakali. The locals thus consider the water from this Fall to be holy.
The Shiva Temple is another interesting place that one should visit. It is surrounded by splendid rocks and is free from any disturbance. This Temple has a unique construction. These rocks have been cut up and decorated beautifully with indegeneous art. Thus the rock paintings and sculptures of the deities are definitely worth watching. Thus this temple is considered important to both locals and tourists.
One can also visit the Amrutesvara Temple in the town of Amruthapura. The history of this town can be traced back to the Hoysala period when this temple was made here. During the rule of the Hoysala King Ballala II this town gained importance and it was because Amrita-dandanayaka who was a general in the army of the King that the Amrutesvara Temple was built. It was who also set up 24 Brahmin families around the Temple. Amruthapura is also famous because on a stone was engraved an inscription that was written by the thirteenth century Kannada Poet Janna who was a poet in the four of King Ballala II. After the Hoysala period this town again lost its importance and no references or inscriptions of this town are found.
Balehonnur is another place that one can visit because there are plenty of coffee plantations here. This place is also the seat of Shrimad Jagadguru Rambhapuri Veersimhasana Mahasamsthana Peetha. The matha here has mystical connections to the Rambha who is a celestial dancer. Thus this matha is one of the five great panchacharya mathas. There is a bridge called the Balehonnur Bridge that was constructed across the Bhadra River.
