Places to visit near Hoode Beach, Udupi
Shree Vishnumurthy Temple: It is located in Balkur. The temple is considered to be approximately 1000 years old. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. There is a big gate at the entrance to indicate the existence of the Shrine. One finds a Garuda Stambha in front of the entrance door. This temple has been renovated recently. However, the idol of Lord Vishnu belongs to the ancient period. This idol is made of black stone and its height is 2 feet. The idol is in the standing position and it has four hands. One also does not find any artificial lights in this temple. There is a popular legend associated with this temple. It is believed that the inscriptions of this temple were thrown in a well that was located close by. That is why no one found out information about this shrine for many years. There are also no proper records to trace the history of this place. One also finds other statues like that of the Serpent God and there is also a small Shiva Linga which is outside the temple. There is also a small beautiful stream behind this temple which one can visit.
Idagunji Ganapathi Temple: There is a popular tale associated with this temple. According to the tale at the beginning of kali yuga, there was a group of sages led by Valakhilya who tried to perform certain rituals but they were not able to do so because it was the beginning of the transition period to kali yuga. One of them whose name was Sage Narada prayed to Lord Ganesha to help them. Lord Ganesha then came to this place and made sure that there was no obstruction so that they could complete the rituals. The rituals were completed and thus this temple was built to express their gratitude to Lord Ganesha. This temple is believed to have been constructed approximately in between the 4th and 5th centuries. The idol of Lord Ganesha here is in the dvibhuja style where Lord Ganesha is in the standing position and he holds a lotus bud and a modak. The atmosphere here is very peaceful and divine too.
Baada Beach: It is well maintained and quite clean. This beach is surrounded by hills on both sides. The beach is also surrounded by rocks. One can reach this beach through a trek that starts from Kirki to Gokarna. This is also a good place to watch an amazing sunrise and sunset. The atmosphere at this beach is also very pleasant.
Belekan Beach: One has to take a boat ride from Gokarna Beach to reach here. Boating is the only way that one can reach this beach. There is also a possibility of spotting dolphins from this beach. Tourists can also enjoy boating here. They can also play beach sports like volleyball and frisbee here. The atmosphere at this beach is also very calm and relaxing.
Basavaraja Durga Island: Is a famous tourist attraction. It is located in Honnavar. The altitude of this place is approximately 45 to 50 metres above sea level. This island is spread over an area of approximately 19 hectares. The island derived its name from the Basavaraja Durga Fort that was built here in 1690 during the existence of the Vijayanagara Empire. When Shivappa Nayak of Bednur who was a Keladi King captured this fort he named it after the Keladi Prince Basavaraja. This is how the island came to be known by the name of the fort. One finds many freshwater wells on this island. There is also an ample amount of greenery on this island. Tourists can also explore the Basavaraja Durga Fort which is on this island. On this island, there are also eight mounted guns. Other than this one can also visit a Hindu Temple here which was built approximately in the 16th and 17th centuries. This temple is dedicated to Nag Devta. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, the boatmen along with their families visit this temple and offer prayers that seek protection and guidance against the wrath of nature because the only way they can make a living is through the sea.
