Grand Bay, (or Grand Baie) is a seaside village and large tourist beach in the district of Rivière du Rempart at the north of Mauritius. Grand Bay was once called De Bogt Zonder Einde (Bay Without End) by the Dutch in the 17th century, and when visiting the village it is easy to understand why. Today, the resort town of Grand Bay is the most popular holiday destination in Mauritius.
Grand Bay owes its popularity to the enchanting quality of its emerald waters and to its liveliness by day and by night.
It offers facilities for safe swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and water skiing, and it is also the departure point for deep sea fishing trips and for boat excursions to the islands to the north of Mauritius: Gunners' Quoin, Flat Island, Round Island, and Serpent Island.
Grand Bay and its surroundings also offer a large choice of fashion and craft shops, hotels and restaurants. You can find in Grand Bay traditional local shops, some operating for almost 50 years, alongside modern shopping centers and worldwide brand shops. Considering the variety of shops and shopping complexes, Grand Bay is definitely a top shopping destination for clothes, jewelry, textiles and for souvenirs.
Grand Bay is also known for its night-life as it hosts most of the island's best bars and night-clubs, including Banana Café, Zanzibar, Les Enfants Terribles and the famous Buddha Bar. For the night owls, the Grand Bay night clubs are the place to be, where parties pick up, generally at around midnight and parties last till the early morning hours.
If you are thinking about when to go to Grand Baie then, come visit Grand Baie at it's best time where you can have a memorable experience without having to worry about small issues. Grand Baie Weather in January-August: The highest temperature recorded is 90℉ which would make you want to run to the nearest café to down a glass of chilled drink, but the moderate humidity of 79% makes this an excellent time to visit Grand Baie.
Grand Baie Weather in September: With average humidity of 73%, temperatures sway between 59℉ to 81℉. Now this may cause a little discomfort, but we are sure not complaining! This weather is perfect to go sightseeing around the city of Grand Baie.
Grand Baie Weather in October-December: The time has been observed as the peak season to visit Grand Baie and rightly so. The temperatures range between 63℉ and 86℉ and the humidity that has been observed to be a usual of 77% marking the perfect climate to head out and check out the best things to do in Grand Baie.
Unanimously crowned by locals and tourists alike as one of the best beaches in Mauritius (and with the number of beaches the country has, that's saying something), the La Cuvette beach is the best beach you could visit on a trip to Grand Baie.
The other important beach in Grand Baie is the Grand Bay public beach, which is the most well-known tourist beach in the area. Despite being one of the shortest beaches in the entire country, Grand Bay's popularity has always been at its peak, owing mainly to it being one of the few beaches offering every tourist activity under the sun.
Most cities in Mauritius are home to swanky casinos, and Grand Baie is no exception. The most popular casino in town is the Senator Club Grand Bay Casino, which is one of the best places you can visit to unwind and try your hand at getting lucky! Housing an adjacent bar-cum-restaurant that serves local delicacies and beverages at reasonable rates, the casino is one of the top places to hang out and have fun after a long day at the beach.
Grand Baie is renowned for being a shopaholic's paradise and the vast number of people thronging Sunset Boulevard at any given point of the day can easily attest to that fact. Sunset Boulevard is a shopping complex located in the heart of the city, and is one of the busiest shopping districts in the town, closely beating the Grand Baie Bazaar. No matter what you're looking for, souvenirs to take back home for your friends and family, beachwear for the rest of your vacation, jewellery, shoes to even high-fashion clothing, Sunset Boulevard has it all.
The entire complex is littered with eateries and restaurants, so you can drop in for a quick bite if you want to take a break from doing all that heavy-duty shopping!
Grand Baie map puts the town 25 km north of Port Louis and between the villages of Trou aux Biches and Pereybere. It takes not more than 30 minutes to drive up to Grand Baie from Port Louis and from the SSR airport it takes around an hour and half. There are bus routes to Grand Baie as well, from locations like Grand Gaube, Triolet and Goodlands.
