Coorg, which is often called the Scotland of India, is nestled amid emerald hills that dot the southernmost tip of Karnataka. History of Coorg

Coorg or Kodagu as it is officially known now, is an astonishing land in the heart of the southern Indian peninsula. This unspoilt “country of million hills”, situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats, is India’s coffee bowl. The tiny district in the state of Karnataka is the biggest producer of coffee.

Madikeri or Mercara as it was known when it was once ruled by the British, is the district headquarters and situated at an elevation of 1,140m. Dotted with red-tiled bungalows, the town has an old world charm about it. The British who colonized Coorg and set up coffee plantations prior to Independence, compared Coorg to Scotland as both the places had grand and regal highlands with a sturdy mountain-dwelling race.

The best time to visit Coorg is through the months of December to February. This is also the best time to visit Coorg for a honeymoon. The temperature of Coorg remains pleasant around 25 degrees in the summer season whereas Coorg temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius in winter months. Popularly known as, ‘The Scotland of India’, the hill station of Coorg is a blessing to South India. Its captivating landscapes, enthralling mountains, extensive variety of flora & fauna, numerous sightseeing places, plethora of activities, and soothing Coorg climate, make it a perfect place for a tranquil vacation. The popular tourist attractions in Coorg include Bhagamandala, Talakaveri, Nisargadhama, Dubare, Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, The Raja’s Seat, Madikeri Fort, Tibetan Buddhist Golden Temple and Nagarahole National Park. Pushpagiri and Brahmagiri in Coorg are ideal for trekking. The area is spread over 4102 sq km. Coorg is home to the famous Namdroling monastery, also called the Golden temple on account of the gold work done on every painting. The place offers countless streams, rich flora & fauna, lush forests and breathtaking views. It is a tourist's paradise. How To Reach Coorg

Coorg is only accessed by road. There are many government and private buses going to Coorg from the major cities in Karnataka. Coorg does not have its own railway station, and the nearest one is at Mysore (120 km). The closest airport is at Mangalore (152 km), from where the tourists can head to Coorg by bus or taxi.

  • By Air- The nearest airport to Coorg is the Mangalore International Airport, which lies at a distance of 165 km from Coorg. From here on you can take a cab to reach Coorg.
  • By Road- Coorg is well-connected by road from the main cities of South India. You can catch deluxe KSRTC buses to Coorg from Mangalore, Bengaluru and Mysore.
  • By Train- The nearest railway station to Coorg is at Mysore, 95 km away. You can hire a taxi from Mysore to reach Coorg. Alternatively, you can also hop on a bus which runs from outside the railway station to Coorg.
