Along with beautiful valleys, Uttarakhand is full of many exciting trekking points, one of which is the Chopta Chandrashila Trek. The mythological significance of Chandrashila dates back to the Ramayana period. Every year many people come to Chandrashila for trekking. Nestled in the lap of Uttarakhand, this excellent trekking point is surrounded by beautiful snow-capped hills.
On knowing more about this place, it has also come to know that a mythological belief is also associated with it. It is believed that King Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters. Moon was very much in love with a girl named Rohini, when King Daksha Prajapati came to know about this, he cursed Moon. After which the Moon gets tuberculosis and to get rid of it, Moon comes to this place located near Tungnath and does severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with this penance, Lord Shiva frees the moon from tuberculosis.
According to the local people, this place was named Chandrashila due to this harsh penance done by the moon. The journey of Chandrashila and Tungnath starts from a small village called Chopta. Chopta is a major way to reach the summit of Chandrashila. You can easily reach the summit of Chandrashila from Chopta via Tungnath. This trek is only 5.5 km. In the winter season, this trek is covered with a sheet of snow, which makes it seem as if we are in heaven. However, going on the trek is prohibited in this season. After reaching the summit of Chandrashila, you will also see a very small temple. People from far places come there to explore the temple.
While trekking on Chandrashila Chopta Trek, you will need to keep basic necessities like a camping tent, food resources along with warm clothes, gloves, sports shoes, warm socks, water bottle, glucose, energy bar, and medicines with you. Trekking in Chandrashila Chopta is not so difficult as the road is well built. After reaching Tungnath one can simply explore the ancient temple of Shiva nestled between the gorgeous hills of Uttarakhand. The place is also home to Himalayan Monals, an endemic species of pheasant. However, locating other animal species might be challenging.
Trekking between March and May is an ideal time. However, you can also trek in winters but during this period there is a risk of getting stuck on snow-covered roads. Hence, visiting in the spring and early summer seasons is the best option.
Seven years back very less accommodation options were available near the trek however, now you'll find many homestays, campsites, lodges, and hotels near the trek. You can also stay at Tungnath after finishing the trekking, several basic accommodation alternatives are present in Tungnath.
