A religious place begetting Venkateshwaraswamy temple is ChikkaTirupati (Expressing 'Small Tirupathi' in Kannada, concerning Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh). It is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. In the South Indian state of Karnataka, it is found in ChikkaTirupathihobli of MalurTaluk, in the outskirts of Bengaluru. Created in the Dravidian style of construction, the temple is rated similar to the TirupathiVenkateswara temple. Vishnu is celebrated as Venkateshwara and his wife Lakshmi as Alamelumanga.

Timings:

The temple is open from 6.30 am to 7:30 pm (all days of the week) and has four daily rituals at various times of the day. The Brahmotsava, the main festival, is rejoiced annually during ShravanaShaniwaara throughout which the festival images of the supervising deities are taken in a parade throughout the streets of the temple in a chariot.

The Temple:


The legend of the place relates to the episode of KandavaDahana in epic Mahabarata. Throughout the dahana, Takshaka fled the forest with little injuries and he cursed Lord Agni to lose his holiness. As suggested by Lord Shiva, Agni prayed to the lord Vishnu here in this region and regained his status.


Venkateswara temple is carved in Dravidian design and the exact account of the temple is not known. The engravings in Mysore records show that the temple is a few centuries old. The temple has a 5-tiered gopura. The temple tank is positioned north of the temple. The central shrine houses the form of Venkateshwara in standing position. There are two precincts around the temple. From the entry tower, the central shrine is located in the axis in the Dwajasthamba (flagstaff), pillar of offering and Garuda Mantapa. The statue of Garuda, the eagle mount of Venkateshwara, is housed in the Garuda Mantapa, bearing the image of the presiding deity. The temple in recent times is directed by the Department of Religious Endowment, Government of Karnataka. It is located 25 km away from Hoskote.

Worship practices and festivals

The temple priests perform the poojas (rituals) during festivals and daily. As at other Vishnu temples in the nearby state Tamil Nadu, the reverends belong to the Vaishnavaite society, a Brahmin sub-caste. The temple rituals are offered four occasions a day: Ushathkalam by 8 a.m., Kalasanthi by 10:00 a.m., Sayarakshai by 5:00 p.m. and ArdhaJamam by 7:00 p.m. individually ritual has three levels: alankaara (decor), neivedhya (meal offering) and deepaaradane (swinging of lamps) for both Venkateshwara and his wife Alamelumanga. While the worship, religious guidance in the Vedas (sacred text) are recited by priests, and worshippers bow themselves in front of the temple mast. There are weekly, monthly and fortnightly rituals conducted in the temple.

The temple is considered sacred as the TirupathiVenkateswara temple and devotees from different states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu revisit the temple. As of November 2012, the temple had annual revenue of ₹1 crore. The Brahmotsavam, the major festival, is celebrated annually during ShravanaShaniwara during which the festival images of the presiding deities are taken in a parade around the streets of the temple in a chariot. Temple Timings: Morning 6 AM to Evening 7:30 PM and no closure of temple in between during afternoon time. Temple is open throughout all the 7 days of the week.
