Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district and lives up to its billing of being a picturesque location. It has managed to maintain its pristine nature over the years. Situated 2100 m above sea level, this peak offers a breath-taking view of rare flora and fauna. One can come across many exotic species in these parts. The route to the peak itself has a brilliant view along with a heart shaped lake, waterfalls and lush greenery the whole way. It is a prime spot for trekking but prior permission needs to be taken before going on these treks. Guided tours are available and can help in enhancing the entire experience. Difficulty Level of Chembra Peak Trek is easy/moderate, therefore an individual above 11 years can book this package. Minimum 5 people are required to book this trek. Chembra is based near the town of Meppadi and is 8 km south of Kalpetta. There are various bus services that would be useful to reach Chembra. You can ascend down at Kalpetta and then proceed towards Chembra.
Chembra Peak is worth visiting all year around. But it might be good, if you avoid the place during the rainy season, as the descent can be quite slippery during heavy monsoon seasons. There are lots of bus services, both government and private, to reach Chembra. You can get down at Kalpetta and from there to Chembra.
About the Activity:
The peak is visible from almost all parts of Wayanad. This place is an ideal destination for trekking activities. You have to take prior permission from the Meppadi forest office before going for a trek at Chembra Peak. The forest office will be open on all days. Overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra peak as there is a threat from lurking wild animals.
It will take at least three hours to reach the top point of Chembra peak. On the way to this peak, you can see a heart-shaped lake, which is said to have never dried up. It is one of the topmost attractions of this peak. This lake is known as 'hridaya thadakam'. From the top of the peak, you will be amazed by seeing the whole Wayanad. You can also view Kozhikode, Malappuram and Nilgiri districts from here. You will be amazed with the enthralling beauty of nature here. There are numerous peaks near Chambra peak. But it is difficult to climb into those, as they are covered with dense forests.
Best time to trek to Chembra Peak is between September and March. Since this period is just after monsoon ends, the forest will be dense and lush green, and the atmosphere will be cool and cloudy. During February and March, as summer settles in, the grass will slowly turn brown and yellow, and trees may start to shed from the dryness. So, if you're looking for a trek where you are surrounded by greenery, consider going before February.
One is advised not to trek in the monsoon because the path will be very slippery and the weather won't be very cooperative.
Also, it is preferable to start the trek early in the morning. Experiencing the morning freshness and the soft sunshine is an experience you will cherish forever.
