The Chaturmukha Basadi is a famous religious site. It is located in the town of Karkala. This is a Jain Temple and it is called Chaturmukha Basadi because of its unique architectural plan due to which the temple is opened on all sides. It is believed that more than one person built this temple. There are some people who believe that this temple was built by Immadi Bhairarasa Vodeya who belonged to the Santara Dynasty and built it towards the end of the 16th century. Some other people believe that Queen Channabhairadevi. There is also another tale according to which it is believed that this temple was built by Vir Pandyadeva who was a Jain King. This temple has been built using the Vijayanagara style of architecture. The temple is made of granite. There are four identical doorways in this temple and all of them will take the devotee to the Garbhagriha. The main deity of this temple is Yakshi Padmavati and the 24th Jain Tirthankara. The passage which is next to the Garbagriha has 108 stone pillars. In the Garbhagriha one finds four black stone statues of the 24th Jain Tirthankara which face the four doorways. One also finds idols of Yakshi Padmavati, Malli, and Suryata in the Garbhagriha.

The Mangalore Airport is located close to this temple. From the airport, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this place. There are many buses that one can take to reach this place. If not by bus one can also travel by taxi to reach this temple. The Udupi Railway station is close to the temple. From the railway station, one can take a bus or a taxi to reach this place. The best time to visit this place is from the months of October to March.

Places to visit near Chaturmukha Basadi, Udupi

Shri Anantha Shayana Temple: The temple is dedicated to Lord Ananthapadmanabha who is another form of Lord Vishnu. Earlier in the 15th century, this temple was a Jain Basadi. Around the same time, Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Narasimha Bharathi Swamiji came to Karkala where this temple is located and the Jain King of the place gave him a warm welcome. The King asked Swamiji to stay but Swamiji said that he would stay there only on one condition. The condition was that there should be a temple with the Lord installed in it. Thus the King gave the Jain Basadi to Swamiji and a stone sculpture of Lord Vishnu was installed in the temple. The idol of Lord Vishnu is carved of only one black stone and Lord Brahma is shown to be coming out of Lord Vishnu's navel and Sridevi and Bhudevi are at the feet of Lord Vishnu. Today this temple is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Koti Chennaya Theme Park: This Park was inaugurated in January 2012 by Mr. D.V. Sadananda Gowda. The theme park is spread over an area of 100 acres. It is located in the Kasaba Grama. This park is dedicated to two brothers who were together till their death and fought against the tyrants who happened to be wealthy landlords. Both these heroes have left their mark on the culture and folklore of Tulunadu. The purpose behind setting up this park is to preserve the memories of these brothers who were born approximately 400 years ago and inspire the Tulunadu people. In the southeastern corner of the park, one finds statues of Koti and Chennaya and they are 10 feet high. On the walls of this Park is the story of the lives of these brothers and even their achievements and death. At this Park one also finds carvings that depict the Tulu culture like the festivals, pujas, fishing, toddy tapping, etc.

Saavira Kambada Basadi: This is a Jain temple that has a thousand pillars. It is located at Moodbidri. The main deity here is Chandraprabha. This temple is also called the crown jewels of three worlds. The temple was designed twice. It was first designed in 1430 by the local chief Devaraya Wodeyar. This temple was again designed in 1962 and it is also the current design of the temple. Later various other additions were made to this temple like the prayer hall, the Manasthamba, etc. There are three separate floors in this temple and the topmost floor of this temple is open for devotees only once in a year. The carvings on these pillars depict various stories right from Mother Nature to mythical animals. They also show the art and culture of the ancient period. This temple also enjoyed patronage from various rulers like the Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas, etc.

Shri Annapoorneshwari Temple: Located at Horanadu is another temple that one can go to. This temple is located on the banks of the River Bhadra. Goddess Annapoorneshwari is considered to be the Hindu Goddess of food and nutrition. Annapoorneshwari actually means feeding everybody. This is why anyone who visits this temple is offered food and shelter within the temple as well. Goddess Annapoorneshwari is considered to be a form of Goddess Parvathi, the wife of Lord Shiva. In this temple, there is an idol of Goddess Annapoorneshwari where she is standing on a peetha. Her idol is covered in gold from head to toe. Akshya Tritya is the main festival that is celebrated at this temple.
