The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the state of Karnataka. It is approximately located at a distance of 38kms from Chikmagalur. The elevation point of this sanctuary is approximately between 750m to 1875m above sea level.The place is spread approximately over an area of 490 square kms.This sanctuary in 1998 was declared as the 25th Tiger Project of India because there is a large tiger population here. The Bhadra River passes through this sanctuary and hence the name Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary has been given to this place. This place is like a paradise for wildlife lovers and one can also find a diverse variety of flora and fauna here.


TRANSPORTATION AND BEST TIME TO VISIT THE PLACE

There are many ways as to how one can reach the sanctuary. The airport nearest to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is the Mangalore Airport or even Bangalore Airport from where one could either take a taxi or local train or even a bus in order to reach the sanctuary. The railway station nearest to this place is the Kadur Railway station. In terms of buses,there are many buses that go to this sanctuary after a certain interval. The best time to visit this place is during the months from October to February

There are many hotels where one can stay near the sanctuary. There are many restaurants where one can eat. FLORA AND FAUNA

This area is divided into two main reserves that are Lakkavalli and Muthodi.A variety of trees are grown here. The Jagara tree is the main attraction here. It is believed to be around 300 years old.There are moist deciduous trees, dry deciduous trees,and semi evergreen trees that become a natural habitat for the fauna there. Other species of flora found here are the Fig trees, rosewood,Toddy Palm,Axle wood,Simpoh,teak, etc

There are many animals found here as well. The tiger population here is quite large. Hence one gets to see tigers here. One can also find elephants, leopards,striped neck mongoose,sloth bear, wild boar, jackals, spotted deer,porcupine,the Malabar Giant Squirrel and also the flying squirrel here. Other fauna found here are the ruby throated pit bull,painted bush quail,Malabar Trogon,grey junglefowl,etc. Several reptiles, some of which are exotic ones are also found here. The reptiles found here are king cobra, common vine snake,common cobra,rat snake,marsh crocodiles,common Indian monitor,etc There are also various butterfly species found here.Some of them are crimson rose butterfly,blue pansy,yamfly,etc


ACTIVITIES TO DO AND PLACES TO VISIT

This place offers plenty of activities for the tourists. One can go boating and also island camping at the sanctuary. Then there is also trekking which is carried out by the authorities here to familiarize the people with the ecosphere and also the beauty of nature.Since there are a number of birds that can be seen in this sanctuary, birdwatching is another interesting activity that is emerging here. One can also go on a Safari here. There are two types of Safaris available here, the first one is Jeep Safari where the passengers are made to sit in a jeep and then taken to see all animal territories. The boat safari is organised within the sanctuary itself and people can view the flora and fauna both on land and on water.

There are a number of places that one visits around here. The Belavadi village is famous because of the Sri Veera Narayana Temple which is built in the Hoysala architectural style. This place is believed to be the same place where Prince Bheema killed Bakasura the demon and protected the village and its people. This temple was built approximately in the 13th century by the Hoysala King Veera Bhallala II. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This whole temple was built out of soapstone and was constructed in two phases. Thus, this is a rich heritage site.

The Bhadra River is another popular site that is visited by the tourists. It originates from Gangamoola. For all the adventurous people trying the river rafting here is a must. Other water sport activities are also carried out here. This river also passes through the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and this is why the sanctuary even got its name.

The Yagachi Dam was built in the year 2001 across the river Kaveri. This dam was constructed for the purpose of irrigation and also to meet drinking water needs. Many tourists visit this place to see the natural beauty and are amazed to see the landscape here. The Yagachi Water Adventure sports is set up in the backwaters of this dam where tourists can indulge in various water sports such as boat ride, speed boat, jet skiing,etc

The Chamundeshwari Temple is another place that many people visit. It is the home to Goddess Chamundeshwari who was the patron deity of the Mysore Royal Family. This temple is approximately built in the 17th century and the architectural style used here is the Dravidian style of architecture. This temple has a huge statue of Mahishasura at the entrance. According to few tales it is believed that the Goddess Chamunda defeated Mahishasura on this hill. The monolithic Nandi here is considered to be the largest in the country.Many devotees visit this place to seek blessings of the Goddess.

One should also try and visit the coffee plantations. If one chooses to stay at a Homestay they can view the coffee plantations within the Homestay itself. There is also an option for trekking in these plantations and this will truly rejuvenate a person.
