With a caldera just 3 kilometres wide and 2 kilometres wide, Barren Island is the summit of a volcano about 2,250 meters above the seafloor and 354 meters above the waterline. Of the 16 previously reported species, only 6 have been observed, the most common of which is Pied imperial pigeon.
Recently, it was news that on January 23, 2017, a volcano erupted in a small episode of about 5 to 10 minutes. This spewed an ash fountain and a red lava fountain from the crater, pouring hot lava onto the slope. But don't worry. This is nothing new in this unique place. It erupted at least 5 times over the next 100 years.
Historically, the first record of a volcanic eruption dates back to 1787. It erupted in 1991 and the smoke rose for about 6 months. Since then, it has occurred every two to three years, most recently in February 2016.
However, all of these eruptions are at the lowest levels of the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This indicator ranks 18 or more volcanoes based on the amount and strength of the erupting volcanic material. This last 2017 eruption was recorded as 2 in the index. This is within the safe range.
