The buffer of this park is spread in totals of 820km2 over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni. How this park got its name is a whole different story. Bandhavgarh means brother’s fort. At the time of rescuing Mata Sita, Lord Ram asked his younger brother Laxman to keep an eye on Lanka since then this place is known as Bandhavgarh. This national park is very rich in biodiversity and moreover, this park is popularly known for the highest tiger population in India. The very first tiger was captured by Maharaja Martanda Mohan in this region in 1951. This tiger is now stuffed and is on display in the palace of the Maharaja of Rewa. In the past years, the lives of villagers and castles were in danger from tigers but now the rising of mining activities are putting the tiger’s life in danger. If not stopped soon the wildlife which is already in the endanger will soon vanish from the earth. History of Bandhavgarh National Park


This park has a rich historical past. Bandhavgarh national park was originally maintained as a game preserve for the maharaja of Rewa and their guests. In 1947, when the Rewa state was merged with Madhya Pradesh, Maharaja of Rewa still somehow was able to maintain their hunting rights. Although in 1968, special conservation was taken when the area was constituted as National Park. In 1972, a new project was introduced. The name of the project was “Project Tiger” and soon thereafter Wildlife protection act 1972 came into force. To extend the area of Bandhavgarh up to 448km2, three ranges were reduced to make this possible.


Fauna of Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is rich in biodiversity so the visitors will witness the beauty of 37 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 80 species of Butterflies, and the number of Reptiles. This is not the real beauty of this park is the sighting of tigers in the jungle. The visitors can see almost 22 tigers in the area of 105km2 as they are high in density. There is a saying about Bandhavgarh National Park that, “In other parks, you’re lucky to see a tiger but in Bandhavgarh, you are unlucky if you don’t see one”. The density in the entire world of Bengal tiger is in this National Park only. A tiger name charger was the first male to be living since 1990. This tiger appears on the cover of national geography and is the second most photographed tiger in the world. This park has a small population of Gaur as well but due to some disease all of them died and then later on some of the animals were shifted from Kanha National Park and this whole project was undertaken by the Madhya Pradesh forest department wildlife institute of India and Taj Safaris by Technical collaboration.
