Balmuri Falls, Srirangapatna

Kāveri or Cauvery, river in southern India, 760 km (470 mi) long, rising in the Western Ghats mountains. It flows southeast across Karnātaka and Tamil Nādu states, entering the Bay of Bengal through two principal mouths. Although of no value for commercial navigation, the Kāveri is highly important for irrigation purposes, chiefly in its Tanjore delta region, where there are extensive irrigation works, ancient and modern. In Karnātaka the falls of the river are utilized for the generation of electric power. The entire course of the Kāveri is holy ground to the Hindus, who call the river Dakshini Ganga, the Ganges of the South. It is at a quiet location on the outskirts of Mysore, and so its also a perfect spot for a picnic with your family or friends. The name 'Balmuri' means 'to curve right' in the Kannada language, which relates to the right turn that the river takes at this spot in Srirangapatna. The check dam over the falls runs across the breadth of the Cauvery river and creates a beautiful cascade of water just 6 feet high. You can walk on the dam, and the water will run up to your ankles. Best way to enjoy the falls is to take a relaxing bath in the water.

Mysore, city, southern India, in Karnātaka State, former dynastic capital of the Mysore maharajas. The city is noted for silks, sandalwood perfume, and handicrafts of ivory, metal, and wood. Places of interest include the maharaja's palace and the ivory throne inlaid with silver and gold that is in the palace. The University of Mysore (1916) is in the city. Mysore was founded in the 16th century and served as the dynastic capital until 1610, when the capital was moved to Seringapatam. Mysore was again the capital from 1799 to 1831, when Bangalore was made the administrative center. Population (2001) 785,800.
