The Achakanya Waterfall is another nice getaway for tourists. One finds this waterfall in the Aralasurali village of Shimoga. This waterfall is formed by the Sharavathi River and it is in the dense forest of the Western Ghats. The height of this waterfall is approximately 6 to 7 feet. One has to trek to reach this waterfall. During the trek one gets to pass through a forest since this waterfall is located right in the middle of the forest. In the forest one also gets to see various types of flora and fauna. Many varieties of birds too can be seen here. The waterfall is surrounded by greenery everywhere. The atmosphere around the waterfall is also quite pleasant. This place makes for a good picnic spot among the locals.

The Mangalore Airport is close to this place. From the airport one can take a bus or a taxi to reach the waterfall. The Shimoga Railway station is close to the waterfall. From the railway station one can take a bus or taxi to reach the waterfall. There are many buses that one can take to reach this place. If not a bus one can also take a taxi to reach the waterfall. One can also hire a private vehicle to reach this waterfall. The best time to visit this waterfall is from the months of July to October.

Places to visit near Achakanya Falls, Shimoga

Tunga Bridge: It was built almost 100 years ago. The bridge was built by Sir M. Visvesvaraya. This bridge is built over the River Thirthahalli and it helps in connecting Thirthahalli with Kuruvalli.  The bridge is somewhat similar to the harbor bridge in Sydney. This bridge has an arc-like structure which is supported by pillars on either sides and is further connected at the top. Because this bridge has a unique shape many people come here to visit it.

Anandagiri Hill: This hill is situated at a height of approximately 300 feet. The place is a good scenic spot from where one gets to see an amazing view of the forests of the Western Ghats. One has to trek to reach this hill. There is also a small place built here for people to sit and relax. It is a good place to watch an amazing sunrise and sunset.

Siddeshwara Hill: It is located close to the Anandagiri Hill. This hill is situated at a height of approximately 200 feet. This hill is also a scenic spot from where one gets to see an amazing view of the forests and villages surrounding this hill. From the top of this hill one also gets to see the Kodachadri and Kundadri Hills. This hill is also a good spot for trekking.

Kuppallli: This is a small village in Thirthahalli. The place is well known because it is the birthplace and also the childhood home of the very famous Kannada playwright and poet Kuvempu. Kuvempu happens to be the pen name of the author. It is also the acronym for the full name of the author which is Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa. This village also happens to be the birthplace of another famous Kannada writer whose name was Poornachandra Tejaswi and he was Kuvempu's son. This is also the place where both father and son have been cremated. The childhood home of Kuvempu has been made into a museum by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishthana which is a trust that is dedicated to Kuvempu. This trust has taken a lot of effort to showcase all the works of Kuvempu to the entire world. The house of Kuvempu is called Kavimame which one can visit. Kavi Shaila is another scenic spot in this village that one can visit. Kuvempu used to sit on the rocks here and meditate and get inspired by nature here.

Venoor: Is a small town which is located on the banks of the River Gurupur. This is an important pilgrimage centre for Jain people. During the ancient times this place was quite flourishing and it was also the capital of the Ajila dynasty. The biggest tourist attraction here is the statue of Lord Gomateshwara which is 35 feet high. This statute was established in 1604 by the Jain King Timmana Ajila. It also happens to be one of the four monolithic statues of Lord Gomateshwara which are found in the state of Karnataka. There are also many Jain Basadis here in Venoor which one can visit. In the countryside one also finds seven other ancient temples. There are two temples which are located on both sides of the Lord Gomateshwara statue. One also gets to admire the beautiful Sahyadri Hills from this town.

Ullal Beach: This beach is located in Ullal which is a fishing village. One also finds many 16th century  Cathedrals and Churches located closeby. This beach is surrounded by 14 acres of casuarinas groves. One gets to watch an amazing sunset here. The atmosphere at the beach is also quite calm and pleasant. One can enjoy a good swim here and also enjoy the water sports here. The visitor can also simply enjoy a walk along this beautiful shore. One should definitely try the local cuisine here because the place is very well known for its delicious seafood. Other than the beach one can also visit other tourist spots in Ullal like the St. Sebastian Church, Someshwara Temple, etc.
