Udupi is located in South West Karnataka. It is believed that the term Udupi came from two Sanskrit words which are udu and pa. The former means stars and the latter one means Lord. There is a popular tale with regards to this which states that King Daksha had once cursed the moon because of which the light of the moon had reduced. The moon then prayed to Lord Shiva so that it could get its original shine back and it is believed that this prayer was made at the Chandramouleshwara Temple which is located here. Lord Shiva was pleased with the prayers of the moon and thus the moon got its original shine back.
